And what's with Jimi Hendrix? He always had his amps turned up so loud and got all this warbly feedback squeel-tone. "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" has to be the worst tone ever. It's just so scratchy, and he's flickin' the pickup selector back and forth.... terrible.

Judas Priest had a heavy, distinctive tone. Then they came out with an album called RAM IT DOWN and their tone is totally different. As soon as I heard it I was like..."uhhhhhhhhggggg THEY'RE USING ROCKMANS!!!!"

take a listen to Kevin Eubanks on Leno...or Larry Carlton for all you jazz lovers.. Both players but THAT is an example of crappy sound.

I always liked Carlton's sound - worked for his lines especially. Spiral still gives me a stiffie after all these years...:D

How about Mick Mars!!!
Before he started scoopin the mids and droppin to D that dudes tone SUKD!!! Listen to SHOUT AT THE DEVIL for a good example!!!

Some of the Zack Wild stuff has tones that should have never been put on tape... I think that it is mostly after the fact effects though??? Either way, nast nasty...

F.S.

No way!!! dude I think ZW rocks and I would bet that out of all the players mentioned on here he uses the least amount of effects. He does have some sh*t that makes your ears want to bleed though hehe.

I don't agree with the dude that said SRV and EJ's tone sucked, I would have to say my favorite guitar players tone would be EJ too many effects or not!

In my OPINION Vernon Reed (sp?) is the person that bothers me the most! he does do some crazy stuff and is a good player but hes one that I can't listen too!

How about Lenny Kravitz??
The 70's are over, John Lennon is dead, get over it!!!

Me either.

EVH "early years", as he put it, were the years when his tone was absolutely unbelievable.

Eric Johnson has more tone in his little finger than that jerk has in his entire rig.

And SRV was the master of Texas tone! His sound was meatier than a Georgia Bar-B-Q!

That guy is just an ignorant jerk trying to stir up trouble on the board.

at least Speeddemon got it. ;)

I dig SRV's tone. I think the thing that happened is that after he died, and even before, there were a lot of wanabees that ripped his tone off and just didnt have the gear to get it quite right. Just a strat and a Fender amp dont make you Stevie!!! You have to have superglued your fingers back together a couple of hundred times!!!

IS IT CALLED "FACETIOUS"?

HAHAHAHAHA

don't go for the hook right away, let the worm wiggle a little bit first.......

this is a seriously funny and disturbing thread.....:D

I'll add my to cents to the pot.

This thread is a waste of cyber-space! :) I could just see if the question were reversed - "who has the best tone..." the same names would be showing up!

Thats the funniest thing I have ever heard!!!
The sad part about it is.....
ITS TRUE!!!!:D

Guys, you are losing site of what this thread is. Don't bitch when someone disses a player you like. This is the "worst tone" thread. Guess I'll start a "best tone" thread for you people that just don't get it.

P.S. jimi WON'T make that list! hehe.

yea, I thought about going with "who has the best" but I was more interested in reasons people DON'T like some tones. I thought the "he is the greatest player ever" would come into the mix to easy with that one. Still came up here, but not too much. It was hard for me not to speak up when someone listed Zakk. I love that guy. Funny to here someone say "there isn't much effect on his guitar..." Man you couldn't get anymore effect on that guitar!

Bostonfan2,
- I have a Rockman, it was a great invention in its day, I used it for years as a practice aid, but it sounds awful. I know there were stories about guys using it as a direct recording device, but...
Anyway its for sale. cheap.

.....the horror.....the horror...............................................................

I recorded direct with one way way back. It took some doing, but it tlurned out only semi worst ever. They were great for playing at night when everyone was sleeping, but that was about it. The problem with Boston is that you are looking back. When they first came out it was way ahead of it's time on a production point. Remeber, all those Boston albums were done in a basement.
I loved the first 2 albums, but can't listen to them now because they just start to grate on you. The one thing I notice about them early on was that no matter how much you turn them up....it never really gets loud. I've never seen them live, but I hear they are really bad. The whole thing was a (basement) studio project and had to become a "live band" afterward.

Yeah the Rockman is awful , i would never record with one but like you said in its day it was kinda cool, as far as a live band you would be surprised to know they are actually way better now than
years ago, they have more peolpe for the harmony parts although Brad can no longer walk awayyyyyyyy ayyyy ayy
well if u know the song you get the idea

Bostonfan2 (still:) )

Yeah, but his tone is definitely unique. You KNOW it's him.

He should be a legend on this site. He is pretty much THE home recording pioneer. He managed to record the album at home and retain all the rights to his songs in a time when that just wasn't done.
