Worst guitar tone ever

Wow, the greats are really getting bashed here. It's a good thing were are all friendly here or some really big fights could come out of this....hehe.

It's a good thing nobody listed Ted Nugent, or I would have to put on my boxing gloves! hehe.

I wasn't going to do this for fear of death threats against me...hehe...but I feel there is a name that is being left out here, and I can't for the life of me figure out why...

PETE TOWNSEND....

Aside from a few (very few) songs by the Who, there are some of the worst sounds ever put down on any given Who album.

Also...
Niel Young
Don't get me wrong, I am a big, big Niel fan, but damn somebody should take that mans old fender amps away from him. What the hell was that fuzz crap on Rust Never Sleeps?? (one of my fav albums of all time)

As long as were being brutually honest here....

EVH. Especially the early years with all that reverb. Man, does his tone suck.

Eric Johnson. What is he thinking with all those pedals? And it's too inconsistant from switching between a different amp for every tone.

SRV. Hello... you're stings are too big! How can anything sound good with those big clunky strings?

Back to piss some more people off...

Danny Gatton. Brilliant player, may he RIP, but no taste for tone.
George Thorogood. Ecch.

BTW, some of my faves are getting trashed here, too: Carlos, Pete, SRV - and I always enjoyed Eric Johnson's tone, weird though it is. Still can't remember that jazz guy's name - kind of a minor player anyhow...

Nice to see no one beating up on the rest my tone heroes: Jimi, Duane, Fripp, Becker, the boys from Floyd, Peter Green, Eric Gale, Ritenour, Benson, Jeff Beck, Leslie West, Skunk... and nobody's nailed any of the acoustic players yet!

you guys just need better stereos.....and BTW all of these aforementioned sucky tone guys all drive cars that cost more than all ya'lls houses.....so, if thats what bad tone is all about....

Well....Saddam Hussein had several cars nicer than mine, several palaces nicer than mine, a yacht the size of a cruise ship, and a net worth of 4 billion bucks. Should I not criticize him as a "worst leader of a country" either ??
Anyway a "worst tone" discussion is like a worst food or worst artist or whatever forum, its just interesting to see what a wide variety of opinions are out there and how taste varies so widely, kinda opens your mind a little to the concept that there is no absolute truth when it comes to music. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Acoustic players??? Easy one...anyone from the Beatles. I love Johns stuff, but damn....someone should have set up his gear for him....And Paul....anything from wings....George was the only one that knew good tone on any instrument. John didn't need good tone. Paul sucked without either one of those guys. Ringo was the original Back Street Boy. But God bless each of them.

Well said Major Tom....guess some of us get it, and some don't.

Cavedog...Tiny Tim drove a nice car too...
A song doesn't always have to have good tone to make it a hit. When all is said and done it's all about feeling.

I agree with Randy Rhoads and George Lynch.
Both are great players and suit my own style, but both should back off the chorus and delay.

Saul Hudson gots a great tone!

and yes, Tom Scholz sounded quite 'processed', but it suited the music, and besided, how can a guitarplayer with a MIT degree NOT sound processed. Such a dude is bent to make his own fx, sucky or not...

[sarcasm]
The worst tones I ever heard were from
1) Stevie Ray Vaughan.
What's up with that shit? Distort or don't, but don't go hovering in between, like the big stringed wuss you are!

2) David Gilmour.
Compression is for pussies with no left-hand articulation.
Chorus is for pussies with no badly tuned strings.
And delay is just for lazy bastards, that don't wanna play things twice.

[/sarcasm]

Exactly! He's got the big clunky strings, and that uncommited, half-distorted tone.

And what's with Jimi Hendrix? He always had his amps turned up so loud and got all this warbly feedback squeel-tone. "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" has to be the worst tone ever. It's just so scratchy, and he's flickin' the pickup selector back and forth.... terrible.

I never liked Jimi. Guy sounded like crap. Can't sit thru one song. Never could.

Lets us not forget the Kinks. I love their stuff, but damn! In their early days they would put knitting needles thru the speakers to get distortion. They were ahead of their time, and had the right idea, but just didn't have the tech yet.

Wow, funny thread. I didn't like the remark about Saul Hudson. He is awesome, and has good tone. It is a simple Marshall. If you don't like that, you don't like 90% of all classic rock....

MIKE

you guys have all flipped your wigs.... Hendrix, Page, Nugent..Townsend...etc, etc.. you gotta be kidding me.

take a listen to Kevin Eubanks on Leno...or Larry Carlton for all you jazz lovers.. Both players but THAT is an example of crappy sound.

Some of the Zack Wild stuff has tones that should have never been put on tape... I think that it is mostly after the fact effects though??? Either way, nast nasty...
