Better Than You
OK, who do you think had the worst guitar tone ever?
My number one choice is:

Steve Howe

Early Yes has some of the worst guitar tones ever recorded. Keep in mind that we are not talking playing ability, just tone.

I don't know, Randy Rhoads' tone, while no where near the worst, is pretty bad. I always read about the Eddie vs. Randy comparisons from the late 70's/early 80's, and from a tone standpoint, Eddie's is leaps and bounds better.

One tone that would be horrible for blues is Dimbag's, yet for his style of music it is perfect. So... maybe it has to do with music style too?

YOU GOTTA BE KIDDIN' ?!!!

STEVE HOWE'S TONE WAS PERFECT.......

for yes.

i mean, seriously, how can you even say that?

dude, i can't respect that opinion at all.

i suppose him being voted to win Best Overall Guitarist five years in a row in Guitar Player magazines annual reader's poll placing him in their Gallery of the Greats doesnt account for anything at all?

Alvin Lee. Howe's tone was at least interesting.

Other shitty tone guys:
Alan Holdsworth
The guy from Status Quo
Jimmy Page (not always, but often)
John Scofield
Almost anyone who used a fuzzbox in the late 60's / early 70's
Randy Bachman
Steve Winwood (who couldn't play either, but his tone was lame too)
Frampton and his fucking talk box.

plus there's another jazz guy I can't think of, whose tone is just atrocious. I woulda left Scofield out if I coulda remembered him.

Relax, buddy. I stated that this has nothing to do with how well they play. Sorry, but Yes had the worst tone I've ever heard. Great player.....bad ear.

...Then came the 80's and they found a guy that knew tone.

Besides, tell me what just 1 of their songs is about? ...Wait...save "worst lyrics" for another thread.

...and by the way...Randys tone was perfect.

Framton...
...good call. Forgot about that one. He stole that Talkbox from George Harrison. And Comes Alive is NOT a great album! 1 good song on the whole thing....that is why they had to make the song take up a whole side...hehe. I have a 3 pick up les paul, and Peter....that third pick up is useless...sounds like crap...and gets in the way.

Page,
Another good call. Great example of a guy that can write like no one else, but can't play a lick of it.

...but, of course this thread is NOT about how well they play, but how bad their tone is...hehe.

.......whut r you guys smokin?.......

because some guys play with a tone that is all theirs makes it bad????

god bless em for being different.......the worst guitar tones are being made right now.....and they're all the fukin same......gimme a break

No, because is sucks makes it bad. Knowing how to play it, and knowing a good sound can be 2 different things.

".......whut r you guys smokin?....... "

...yes we are. Why do you say that like it's a bad thing?

BTW AS LONG AS THERE ARE BOOGIES, THERE SHOULD NEVER BE A BAD TONE.

Wow, I'm in the wrong movie...Steve How's tone was great, so was page's (page had shitty tone?!? you guys are freakin' me out). I think the guitar on No Quarter is one of the coolest tones ever recorded.

Bad tone
Styx, hands down, worst rock tone ever recorded.
Bachman had a shitty sound, I'd have to agree.
Lindsy Buckingham (great musician tho)
Loverboy - I may have them mixed up with someone else, but I doubt it

Like they say, opinions are like assholes...

Everyone has one..:p

Or two...

One man's trash is another man's treasure I guess, but Keith Richards ?? come on dude !- one of the founding fathers and definers of electric guitar tone, first to use a fuzz on a commercially successful tune (Satisfaction), using many different sounds over the years. A tele, 335, Les Paul, Strat, etc etc straight into a cranked Fender or Hi-Watt or Vox amp; doesn't get any better.

I won't list any metal players with their scooped mid ultra distorted "death" tones, since that genre is not my cup o' tea...

I'll mention one that has been around for decades, and except for his early days and a few exceptions maybe, has the most consistently uninteresting tone - Santana. Just TOO sustained, "smooth", "warm", lacking in "bite", and predictable for me...

Worst tone for the amount of commercial success, again over decades, and again excluding the earlier years, Clapton. I just think his tone since the late seventies or so is just about as weak as one can get out of a strat.

OK, 2 more

Link Wray - so bad it was good!

Tom Scholtz (is that right ?) or whoever of Boston - UGGHH - Ugly tones in the most over processed and over-layered yet wimpish way, a perfect background texture for the screetchy voice of their lead singer, exacerbated by the excessive amount of airplay they received. Painful for me to even think about...

I never liked Clapton's "woman" tone he had with Cream. Just sounds muddy to me. Like they're all playing in the same range.

The incredibly mediocre Saul Hudson.
Can't play or tune up, either!

I get lambasted every time I say this.... but Steve Vai needs on this list.
So does George Lynch from time to time. I can't even get through "Mr. Scary". The tone is just too painfull.

I have a whole list of blues guys whose tone I can't stand, but I think I've already stepped in a big pile with what I've already said...
