heheheh, these youngsters eh??? think they can type so quickly!!! :p

anyway, i sat down and thought hard about the problem. My only concern is how high the table will be.:confused:

The table has it's foundation height, to which the other parts will be put on. Thus, it should be completely modular.

What height would be best? Folkcafe - what height is the tabe off the floor with you?

Mine is 29". The thing to consider is if your room has a 8' ceiling height you don't want the monitors at the mid point of 4'.

29" + riser + monitor height for me equals less than the 4' mid point. I have the angled ceiling and that helps reduce the modes somewhat. Like I said previously try building around the way you work and the monitors.

Before building mine I set up some sawhorses and put together a temporary platform and tweaked monitor placement with the generous help from my local vendor (they loaned me a few pairs of monitors I am interested in for a week). Using my ears and a RTA I got placement settled and then built around that.

Just something to consider and add to the confusion.

I determined my table height by experimentation. I sat down with an adjustable table and played around until I felt comfortable, I moved things around and used a tape measurement to make notes of what I liked. Im only 5ft 9 inches tall and I also sit with my guitar so it had to accomadate that as well. Just plain guessing or using a predetermined desk height may not work well for everyone. I left room for expansion and room for convection cooling. I like my mixers to be tilted down in front a little too, so there is a 6 to 10 degree slope. Try to envision at least one level of upgrade of equipment in your design.

hmmm.... i'm more concerned about where the level is when i sit at my chair. I know it sounds stupid, but thats where i'll mix most of the time.

29" is sensible though. I like it.

I think i'll try and make 29" rack stands as you did.

Admittedly, I havent got half of all the rack space i'll have, but this is something i plan on only building once. and something tells me that the 19" rack standard will not change for a long time.

Check out office desks

I saw in home recording magazine, that using office desks and stuff, was almost the cheapest way out. I got a desk setup with a corner station and two 50 inch pieces on either side, for 300 bucks brand new. Sauder.

I use dual monitors, and will be going to triple flat panels, which will give even more room on the desktop. It really looks good though. I would suggest custom is nice, but if you need something professional looking and ready to go, try Office Depot, and get a corner unit and some 36 or 60 inch side desks to connect to it.

Thats a good idea, but the problem is, it doesn't take into consideration any rack units etc.

Rack space is vital in my design, as everything i have
(so far) is rack mountable. even my computer.

Thanks for the idea, I already have some office tables, I might use them for the basic design, but they are not wide enough.

My design is almost 3' in width. That's just to fit everything in!!!!!

It can work just fine, if thought out.

I have racked equipment too. Here is a link to the desk that I have... there are tons of ways to do it. I had a corner to use it in, which made it ideal. My studio at home is not the normal....sitting at a mixing desk, looking at the singer in front of me type of room.

My vocal booth is actually to the right and behind my mixing area, in a seperate room.

The pic, included is a rack that I built. I have three of them. The other two on on the other wall to the right, unseen in the picture. My computer is not rack mounted yet, still contemplating on that, since my stuff is all digital, and all the digital connections from the mixer goes into the computer, ADAT lightpipe cable is something I have to consider.

Especially with the fold out patchbay, that, is a work of art!:cool:

What you've shown me there is generally what I already have, but a lot tidyer and a lot cooler.

I'm looking for a direct design, so I can have all the rack stuff I need at my fingertips.

If you have any 'practical' tips. Like how i should wire it up, or anything like that, please tell me, i'm happy to listen to any ideas.

That's one of the upgrades I'm building into the racks I'm making. One thing you want to watch out for is clearence of the gear as it swings out. I f you don't have enough side clearence, as it swings out to open the back corner of what ever is mounted will hit the inside of the rack and won't open. Know what I mean?

you would have to make is so that the side panel came off, and that the rack would have all the space to rotate.

I'm now considering making 2 'boxes' on each side of the monitors for the racks. Although they will be horizontal (and thus not quite so sexy) I think they will be easier to build and to maintain.

I dunno now... sheesh.

Nah, I'll keep the design the way it was, but the tower rack on my right will have an option of opening like a door, so I can modify and add etc.
