3 songs recorded/mixed/mastered in 13 hours.

Here is one of them (it was the shortest song, so it is what I can fit of my meager server space right now.....)

Sonus,
Nice song. I like the whole M/F duet thing. I was just expecting something more ....spacey....?? Guess I gotta go listen to the lyrics now....;)

Ummmmmmmm, I hope you didn't get the idea that I wrote/played this song. I just did the easy stuff, like recording/mixing/mastering it is all! ;)

Sonus,
Sorry 'bout that. I have trouble keeping all the characters straight. Lets see:
Producer/Engineer (nothing else)
Producer/Engineer/Musician
Producer/Engineer, Wannabee Musician
Musician
Musician/Producer/Engineer
Musician, Wannabee Producer/Engineer
Wannabe Musician/Producer/Engineer (<-me)

And then there's Mastering...

Hey Lana. Thanks!

We are currently taking bookings for October in the studio....hint hint.....;)

Imagine if I actually would have had a BUDGET to work with. This 13 hour stuff is insane. It just happened to be not so offensive this time as the artist came in reasonably prepared and didn't argue with me about what was going to work for them. That is a nice change!

-sigh

Yeah , but the bad thing is you are in Oregon ... I am in Oklahoma .. :)

Just caught that! Ummmmmmmmm, what I am supposing you think is the F in M/F is actually a M! I will pass that on to him though! ;)

Cool song. Solid recording. Could you give us some details? How many/what mics on the kit, gates, compression, etc. I especially like the lead guitar. What gear was used to play it and how'd you record it?

LOL - Sonus, 3 songs front to back in 13 hours? You'll be doing more of this, just wait and see... ("Hey, there's this guy in Portland who'll do, like, 3 SONGS IN 13 HOURS!") They sounded pretty well-rehearsed, though. I could swear I've heard that guy before...

I like the sound on the guitar too, and the drums also, but you know, your posting mp3s here and inviting comments from us isn't going to have much of an impact on the way you mix songs. But it IS a benchmark, so keep putting 'em up occasionally. The sound is clear and attractive.

ap - what I just said to Sonusman is the introduction to what I want to say to you. I don't mind your asking him what gear he used, cuz it's a natural question, but you know, I don't think knowing it will make you or me better recordists. But I do think that listening to the sound he gets and then nudging your own stuff in that approximate direction WILL.

dobro! Don't even put that kind of cosmic karma out there for me damnit!!! I have to eat, and 13 hour demo's are not gonna cut it! ;)

Actually, I DO in fact listen to what people have to say about the mixes. I may not change the way I mix the song in question, especially if what you are hearing is a final mix, but if it is push mixes, certainly I consider opinions, and some I even use. Usually though, others comments show me where I need to go with TRACKING in the future.

ap. 8 drum tracks:

Some sort of Pearl kit>

Kick - D112> Oram MWS pre> Drawmer MX 30
Snare - 414> Oram MWS> Drawmer MX 30
Toms - Audix D series> TL Audio Ivory pre
Overheads - Pair of AT 4033's> Focusrite Red pre> Behringer Composer

Bass - Forgot his gear but we used a DI output from his head> Drawmer 1960 pre

Guitar 1 - Forgot the exact Fender> Marshall JCM 900> SM-57> ART Pro MP
Guitar 2 - Les Paul> Fender Super> SM-57> ART Pro MP
Lead Guitar - Same as Guitar 2

Vocals - 414> Oram MWS> Drawmer 1960 compressor.

All Monster cable used from mics to preamps.

We use ADAT XT 20's.

All processing at mix was via the Yamaha O2R console, even the reverb, except a little Pitch Shift thingy I use from an Eventide Harmonizer. Please don't ask for details about eq/compression/etc......except I will say I end up using the O2R's Compander processor a lot usually. When set right, it works more or less like a ultra clean expander/gate/compressor. The 13 hours I spent on this was between two 6.5 hour days, and the second day, I recorded all the vocals/mixed/mastered the whole thing, so really, it was all a blur! :)

Oh, this was mixed to DAT at 16 bit via the SPDIF outputs on the O2R to a Tascam DA 30. Mastering was via QMetric and the L1 Ultramaximizer using Wavelab.

sonus,
Thanks for taking the time to type and list all those details out for us. Sure, I don't have 1/10th of that equipment at my disposal, but find it very interesting to read how things are being done.
