Mike mixed this today, just uploaded it to SC for you to review and critique. He's got a new set of Focal speakers that he's mixing on. This version also includes drums from Poeticintensity (Jason). Let us know what you think about this mix please.... :D:D:D:D

Pretty amazing hearing these drums after listening to about 10 tracks from this page. Not a putdown on them, but it's just nice to have examples to strive for in my own mixing. Quick question, who decides how the bass is being mixed? Is this the artist telling the producer what they want it so sound like, and they are using their expertise to give it as much as possible, or is it just the producers decision then the artist decides if they like the sound? Only reason I'm asking is because this is the sound of the bass I prefer to hear, and I would love to hear it even more, but that's my personal preference, and I'm wondering what that process is like. It sounds amazing to my amateur ears. Can I ask what mic was used on the vocal recording?

Hi Lackshustle! The bass sounds this way because I also like it. I'm the bassist/ singer/ mixer/ producer/ bottle washer guy on this song but get a lot of help with decisions and technique from co-writer/ guitarist/ singer / producer/ chief cook Gerry (ido1957) and advise/ feedback from this site. We try to develope a standardised "process" for recording/ producing so that our sound is consistent. Here we are adjusting for some new effect software we are using (Cakewalk CA2A) and new mixdown speakers (Focal 826WLE). I'm using a Rode NT2A microphone on this song.
Thanks for listening!

Drum mix sounds good, Mike! Overall, the whole thing sounds great. If it were my mix, I'd bring the drums up only about .5 - 1 dB for a bit more presence when everything gets going on. I'd also consider putting the lead guitar somewhere other than dead-center, so it's not competing with the vocals. Even if it's like 5%-10% off-center, that'd make it so you can bring it up in the mix even more without tromping on the vocals...

Good stuff, man! It's a pleasure to work with ya!

It's a bit dark.
I'm working out of town in San Francisco so I've been busy. Thanks for the responses and suggestions! Mike has this on his computer so he can try out a few recommendations with those fabulous new speakers. :D:D:D:D

I don't think the drums need to come up persay. They just need a slight presense EQ. Try a boost around 8k just to emphasize the transients slightly. Overall, the mix sounds fantastic and has this awesome "glue" feel to it. Probably some nice master bus compression or something.

Thanks Burningbridges and Ray! While Gerry's out I get to try this on other songs after I try some of these suggestions.
