The problem seems to be with the SBLive! WDM drivers working with Samplitude. Creative has new drivers for the Live! at their site (or soundblaster.com) but they are also WDM and won't work with samplitude (not sure about Sequoia but probably) and they have no intentions of releasing anything otherwise (according to their E-mail). We'll have to wait for Magix or Sek'd to release patches but from what I got from their E-mail it will probably only be for version 6 and up. If anyone knows different let me know.

I played around with XP Home for a while and couldn't get it to work wihtout dropouts using Cubase 5.1 and a US-428 on the ol' laptop.

I did notice, though, that there are TONS of things that you can do to optimze XP that I wasn't willing to mess with, yet. Much easier to dual boot and optimize the hell out of the ME partition. Still, I love the stability of XP. I'm always prowling for updated drivers and such to see if I can get it to work, yet.

Well, I've been using XP for about 2 months now. It freezes up on me quite regularly. Don't get me wrong, it is much better than 98 or ME. But it seems like with XP, a program crashing often brings down the OS too. I think maybe win 2K was a little more stable.

I have been experiencing this on a few different systems. A common feature of all of these is that they have weak video cards.

2 annoying things about XP...

1. The report error dialog box every time a program crashes (I think can be disabled)
2. The fact that when you end a task with the task manager, it often won't end it immediately - instead delaying, and then telling you the program is not responding - are you sure you want to end, or would you rather wait. I prefer unix - you kill something - it dies - end of story.

On the positive side - even though I've been crashing once or twice a day for some time now, the OS hasn't become un-recoverable yet.

I've been waiting and listening but yesterday decided to bite the bullet and put XPPro on. Everything works fine EXCEPT no multitrack audio....but that's cool as I don't have a soundcard at the mo, only the one in the motherboard which doesn't have an XP driver. Plays winamp though.

But everything else is much much faster that the 98se I had before. Explorer and Express both perform much better and programs open and close a lot faster. All programmes are working better than before. So I like it :):)

Win XP *or* XP PRO????

I AM NOT CLEAR...

At least in what concerns to Music (an multimedia in general), which is BETTER? WHY???

I already bought the full oem Win xp ($70). I stil can exchange it!!...

I think the only significant difference which would apply to you would be that XP Home does not support multi-processors.

what are you using?
i just setup 2 DAW's and they are working fine under Xp. one was a dual athlon with a Motu 2408mkII and the other is a 1.8 athlonXP with a Staudio C-port....

Did you have any problems getting the MOTU 2408 to work with XP? Win XP does not see my 2408 as an audio device. Any suggestions?

been running XP Pro for a few months now - no problems at all - my system is a dual P450 w/512RAM - separate HD for audio all SCSI - upgraded as 98SE was never really stable on a P500 and wanted to test the dual processor capabilities - also found that my audio hardware vendors had released all drivers for XP so the upgrade was worth while - always check for drivers for your hardware before upgrading your OS - try to do clean install or expect PROBLEMS - if it ain't broke no need to fix it as any thing that goes wrong will be blamed on your new OS.

for most sceptics, XP has already been bench tested in it's Win2000 guise - upgrade at your peril as with most OS's - the only thing left is for all hw vebdors to supply the drivers, most of whom have done by now.

running emagic Audiowerk8 card, also upgraded a system with MOTU 2408 - no problems but theres a method to the tedious install.

i didn't have any problems at all. i just put the pci card in the computer, xp saw it, i installed the drivers and it worked fine. though the first time i tried it didn't like being on one IRQ and it made my pc halt and one time my pc didn't even start up

No problems at all with the Delta 1010LT.

Some definite issues with N-tracks. Kept freezing up - something that never happened with '98SE. Tried a demo of CoolEdit Pro, and it works like a charm. Ditto with Sound Forge.

I've been having problems with ntrack freezing too. I don't know if it's XP or the new version of ntrack. It is still usuable, but I can expect a crash every few hours. In general I'm disapointed that XP is so easy to crash. You'd think by now they could have built in enough seperation between the OS and application so that an application crash would almost never kill the OS. Instead, XP seems even more vulnerable to this than win2K. Also, I'm sick and tired of the 'End Task' dialog box. If decide to kill a process, I don't want to be promted a second time.

-- just thought I'd add that I'm using a delta1010 too. Could be the delta drivers.

It's just with n-tracks, so I imagine it's time to go write nasty hate mail to the people at fasoft.com

I have one prob with XP

The CDROM drives act like spoilt kids

Insert a Disc into the Drive!!!!!!!!!!

They seem to take over the whole puter if they think there should be a disc in the drive. I don't mean the autoplay function cos that's switched off it's just their demand that you reinsert a disc if you've removed it.

modem issues...

I upgraded for about 15 minutes, then had to roll back to 98se. It installed ok except it didn't load easy creator, cubasis or the modem driver (motorola sm56). Ironically, I couldn't go on the internet to find a driver for the modem, so I had to uninstall. It turns out that I cannot find a driver and that this is very common issue with the modem, so I bought a $15 cheapie (modem) that someone swears will work.

Oh yeah, since I've uninstalled, I'm getting weird problems with losing access to my cd drives while using Acid 3.0

question: before I reinstall XP, should I uninstall the cd burning software????

My problem is that XP does not see my MOTU 2408's chanels. The PCI consol sees them, but not XP.

My problem was that I had to upgrade the BIOS for my motherboard. I got the tip from the MOTU tec support.

Win XP has provided me with the most sucessful DAW build that i've had yet. After two frustrating years fo using Cubase 5.0 on a windows machine I finally swithched to SONAR and Win XP. The WDM drivers are the way to go in widows audio. I have not had a crash in two months! SONAR - Reason - Soundforge 5.0 and Acid all run flawlessly in Win XP:)
