Hi guys,
I was wondering if you could help me out here.
I presently have windows 98 in my computer. It's got a 350 Mega Hz pentium 2 chip. I can't save my recordings with this operating system. Do I have to go out and upgrade my system to 98 Me or is there a way around this problem.

Details.

Why exactly can't you save and what is the problem, what are you trying to do, what software etc.?

The manual says you need windows 98 ME. As I said in the above post, I have windows 98. I tried to save my newly recorded song anyway, but was informed by the computer that there was no driver for the MR8.
I have N-Tracks as my software, but I don't think that is the issue here. My guess is I'll probably have to spend more money getting a recent Windows operating system. I bought the MR8 to avoid having to dick around with the computer. I am hoping one of you guys has an answer that will help me avoid reinstalling a new operating system.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm I've run n-Track on a P133 PC with 32 Megs of RAM and Win 95B. I have also run it on an AMD K62 350 PC with 128 Megs of RAM and Win 98SE. In both cases, N-Tracks worked fine.

Win ME is Windows Milenium and it stinks, man.

I just found the answer to my problem by reading one of the older posts on this forum. Apparently, I have to purchase a CF card reader to save the files to my PC. My lack of experience with CF media and lack of sleep prevented me from seeing the obvious solution.

I also have Windows 98 (2nd edition).

I bought a card reader at Best Buy for something like $13.00

REALLY easy to use. download the included software and plug it in a USB port.

Reads on your system as a "removeable drive" as opposed to A: drive or C: drive etc.

very easy!!!

Yes Markophonic, I got a reader today and it seems to work fine. Now I just have to solve the problem of the undo/redo command and I should be a happy camper.

I see you've discovered the "delete unused" thing in the menu section.

I had the same problem...

There is a problem with tracks not getting deleted, where you may find that 'delete unused' isn't freeing as much space as you hoped. I got past it by moving tracks to 5/6, and back again and then deleting unused, but another option is to identify the "left over" tracks and delete them from Windows.

What a pain the undo/redo issue is. It seems to me that is should be called new take key, because that is in essence what it is. If it was really undo/redo, then it would erase the bad take. There are at least four references to this command in the manual with no explanation as to how you get back the lost track time. Even the appendix doesn't mention it. The manual looks like a rushed job to me. Overall, think they did a good job with the MR8. It's just frustrating for me because I don't have a lot of time to mess with the machine after a long day at work and then having to take care of my kid, (I'm a single dad). By the time I get to the machine I just want to make music and not have to waste energy and time trying to work out how to circumvent the bugs in the machine.

It works great most of the time, but I find if I keep recording over the same part, that eventually the 'delete unused' does not get rid of everything.

Hopefully Fostex will make it an option to disable 'undo'. Considering that it looks like every 'take' is saved, the thought may be that once bigger cards come down in price, the unit will feature 'virtual tracks', which would be very cool.

Early versions of 98 had somewhat flakey USB support. It would probably work on some systems and not on others. Me can suck really bad, or it can be a blessing...Its a crapshoot. 98se is a little more reliable.

I had good luck with ME, but ran into plenty of problems on other systems

I don't understand why USB support should not be available in Win 9X. I am able to use USB support for my camera, printer and sound card. I prefer using USB to playing around with the card. Besides the convenience it offers, I worry about possible damage to the card from repeated removals and insertions.

The Smartmedia card that came with my camera died after removing it from the camera and later re-inserting it. Dead... That could get expensive fast. I guess I will have to upgrade...

Win 9X requires that the device (Camera, recorder, etc.) manufacturer provide a software driver to allow the unit to be recognized by USB. Some manufactureres (Korg, for example) provide a driver on their web sites, or ship one with the unit. Fostex, and others, are starting to abandon support for old operating systems.

Oh! Well that does not bode well... I hope to be using the Fostex with my computer for some time. If they have already dropped support such a popular operating system (I bought it new in the box a couple of months ago) I worry what will happen in 3-5 years. Will they drop support for their older hardware in NEW oprating systems...???

Windows XP/Me/2000 ship stock with a USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE DRIVER. If windows 98 had one built in, the mr-8 would work fine. I have been looking for one for Windows 98 every where on the net, I've installed this one that Fuji made for one of their cameras but it didn't work. Just thought I would take a chance.

Thanks for searching. If you come across anything that works please let us know.

UMSS.SYS

Turntablist,
I do not yet have an MR8, but I do use Win98SE, and was wondering if the USB Mass Storage Drivers that I use with my Thumbdrive might work with the MR8. They are located at http://www.thumbdrive.com/downloads.htm. I noticed that UMSS.SYS is a microsoft file created for WinNT, but it works for the Thumb Drive with Win98. I am not sure what the *.pdr and other files are, but maybe these would have to be written specifically for the MR8 to get it to work.

When I get home tonight, I will download these drivers and try them out and let you kow how it goes.
