Windows 2000 vs. XP

My Win 98SE computer, stable for 4 years, suffered more AC in the chassis than it wanted a couple of months ago so when I rebuilt I went with XP. It has proven to work very well and is easy to get going with. My only problems were loading Auto-Tune (I finally downloaded from Antares' site and registered it successfully) and BBE Sonic Maximizer DirectX plugin. The latter says it will work for Win 95/98/Me/2000 but it won't work for XP. I am glad I went with XP just because all the new stuff is designed to run on XP. Why deliberately install any but the latest? Especially since (speaking as a long-time XP skeptic) this is now a very stable system...and doesn't have the RAM limitations of 98.

Rambling man says go with XP.

yeah.. 98 is pretty outdated/unstable compared to the newer os'

98 also isnt supported anymore... so microsoft wont iron out any more of its wrinkles

Perhaps slightly off topic, but any current Win2K users should avoid installing some of the most recent Microsoft security patches.

The one shown as KB835732 should be avoided by most. For many Wikn2K systems, the installation of this patch will effectively kill your system. It affects performance, and results in a system that can run something like 100 times slower than normal. Just logging after boot can take 30 minutes.

Microsoft has some info about this here:
