Have worked two days on this OS and happy to say that I have experienced nothing other than a few learning curves.

This OS is robust, easy to manage, and provides a level of control over all things that has not been seen in other Windows OS's.

The only little drawback is that it is a memory hog compared to NT 4. Uses about 20 more MB of RAM. But the stability of it is astounding so far. No clitch's at all. The built in drivers are excellent. Have found my printer, modem, monitor, video card drivers native to the OS. Haven't looked for my scanners driver yet, but will probably find it too... :)

The new "look" of 2000, meaning the icons, and Explorer are really neat. Also, movements on it are more fluid. Things don't just pop up, they sort of morph.

I have noticed increased internet performance with the integrated IE5 and Outlook Express 5. Dial Up Connection was a snap to configure.

I am looking forward to more hardware and software that is able to run on this excellent OS. I think 2000 proves that Microsoft will still be a player in game no matter what happens with their current legal troubles.

I wholly recommend using this OS if you are able!!!

Dude! sonusman! How do you like your LynxOne sound card! $470 isn't bad for Apogee converters. I gots me one and its pumping away just fine. How do you like the built in XLR snakes? (a new driver is out for it!) Dose win 2000 support win98 aps? I have Cubase VST/24 for win but I hate Win98. I have managed to crash my system 4 times in the last 3 months due to direct X conflicts!!! :
(450Mhz Pentium III
256 MB PC 100 SDRAM
9.1GB AV rated SCSI Hard Drive
2.2GB internal Orb Drive
20x 8x recorder, SCSI internal CD-R Drive
40x CD-ROM Drive
Diamond Viper v770 3-D Video Card
LynxOne 24 bit Sound/Recording/Midi Card)

aaahhahahggg!!! (the only way I lived through it is the fact that I do all my own computer work and repair) I hate win98 but I cannot due without Cubase and Wavelab. Can you tell me what you know?
Thanks
Landon

PS still can't get over how cool your "groovin-toons wagon" is :)

I played around with it today some and I agree it's pretty nice.

It's really not that much different from 98 looks wise. Real easy to use & whatnot. A few minor annoyances that they haven't fixed but oh well. Really glad to see the hardware managers & wizards! FINALLY!

Have you noticed how you don't have to restart the computer after installing software now (at least not as often)? I like how it manages dll's.

I was also suprised at how much hardware it recognizes. The "buzz" is that it doesn't like a lot of hardware...but I had it up & running on old hardware no problem. Old Voodoo Banshee video card...old Ensoniq AudioPCI soundcard...older Kingston NIC...etc. (old meaning 1 or more years)

Anyway, I only played with it for a couple hours. I'm looking forward to taking it home and trying it out with some games & other software that didn't run under NT4.

Time will tell...but I think we've got a winner. I advise everyone to nag their hardware vendors for drivers!

Gearless,

I have no idea on god's green internet why you are using Win98!!! It appears that you have everything you need to run a NT system. But, you cannot run 2000 yet!!! Wave Lab and the Lynx card are not talking to each other yet.

But, NT 4 would run killer on your system. You should really get to it.

I love my Lynx card. It sounds so beautiful really. I have had it for almost 2 months now, and have not regretted the purchase at all! I only paid $450 for mine thought...na na na na naaaaaaa na.... :) But even at $470 it is a steal.

Slack, I have noticed a lot less rebooting. But hell, the install time makes up for that!!! Geez! Will it ever install before I grow old? :D I have never used 98, so I had nothing to compare it to.

I have 98 on my home pc and don't really care for it, too many restarts(easy to navigate for the wife and kids that's all). What is the minimum ram for 2000 anyway? I'm still working on the pc I will be using for recording and my own use and want to get as much in before I fire it up. Looking to have 256 meg (have 128 meg currently) when I fire it up for the first time!

Well Steve, I have 128MB of RAM and 2000 runs very stable. I recorded a 24 bit, 48KHz audio file using Cakewalk Pro 9 and not a clitch.

Before you can consider running 2000 on the machine you already have, you need to make sure that you have at least NT 4 drivers for all your hardware. You should also check at the vendors site to see if they have tested their NT 4 drivers to work on 2000. Mostly though, I have not had a problem.

Some software I have that works on NT does not work on 2000. I have Sony Hotburn, which I use to author CD's and it don't work. Wave Lab does not work. Those are the only two so far, but I haven't installed everything yet as I am still trying to get my system to run as a triple boot with 2000, NT 4, and 95. Currently, I have all three installed and basically working, but I haven't installed all the driver for any of them, and haven't enabled DMA on NT 4 or 95. So we will see.

Basically I have choosen to run all 3 because I need Wave Lab, so I need NT. I want to use my stupid ADAT PCI card, so I need 95 or 98. But I don't want to install a browser to NT 4, so I am running 2000 so I can get online. But, even running a dual boot system is hard enough to configure, so if you are considering a migrate to 2000 with your machine, be aware that you may have some issues that may keep you from doing so. I am brave and have spent the last 5 days twiddling with this crap and it has not been fun.

But if you can just run 2000, well, you can do so much worse. It is really nice.

Ed Thanks for the warning!!! I've heard about the support with NT but not with 2000 yet. I won't be as brave as you with the dual
or triple boot system. I'll leave the home pc the way it is (I'm the one who has to figure it out) but I will install 2000 in a single boot system for mine. My one advantage is that I don't have any hardware or software yet, so some problems MAY be avoided.

I say some because I already hear tech support calling!!

I love win2k as well, but I have problems cause I need drivers. I still need drivers for my CDRW, and my Maxistudio ISIS from Guillemot. So I have all this power, and nothing to record on :( I think I am going to put win98se back on for the time being. I just can't stand the thought of going back to it though. Oh well. Anyone know how to make drivers??

mike

One thing (again my brother told me) is to go the web sites and download the latest drivers. I haven't gotten into it yet but I can understand now what he was talking about

Hey sonusman.
You are running Wavelab 3.0 right? Well I am one of those unfortunate guys that bought it earler in 1999 so I only got Wavelab 2.0. Do you know anything about 2.0 and win 2000? (dirty bastard #@*!$&*#@! 3.0 *!@$#*$%$) :) Did you buy the upgrade from 2.0 to 3.0? if so how much did it ding you for?

Buy the way, what kind of recording gigs do you get most often in Portland? (what type of music).....trying to find out what kind of music scean there is in Oregon.
