Hi,
I need a dirt cheap solution. (i.e. free or nearly so)
I became delusional over binaural envrionment recording. I thought it would be clip-and-go. Oops. Body mic'ing must be an artform because I'm trying to do a rig to allow total freedom and it's proving very difficult. It took forever to find a way to clip them to minimize the mechanical noise and it's still not 100% (certain fabrics are nearly impossible.)
The problem I can't begin to fix is wind. Foamies are useless; walking at a normal pace with no wind produces this woosh... woosh... woosh... (reminds me of the intro on Orbital's "In Sides" album.) With any actual breeze or walking fast, they are crushed. Total breakup. Wind? Actual 10+ MPH wind? I have no clue what to do, but it's not recording.
There are blimps, yea right. And fuzzys, but quite expensive. And bulky. And ugly. I'm guessing it's hard to get subjects to act normal when you're wearing Troll Doll heads on your shoulders. And at $50 + shipping they cost half what the mics did. Still, do those things work? Rycote Lavalier Windjammers? or Micro-Cats?
Did I mention I'm a bum? I have to come up with a solution very cheaply. So far it seems to involve theft. I haven't found any D.I.Y. sites to cover this; tons about mic building, mic placement, studio dampening and supression of air noise, etc. I found this place in my searching. I'll try asking.
I want to be able to mic a cyclist or a basketball player. Motion and wind, yet unobtrusive. I'm sure it can be done if you have money. I do not. Suggestions?
Thanks for reading.
