Win98 or NT4?

Ha. A certified Novell guy. No wonder you're acting like such a little dipshit. Scared aren't you? You're sad little system was all the shit just 5 years ago...and now the tide begins to turn.

You obviously know very little about NT Server or Microsoft server applications seeing as how you chose to pick on the only one that does actually work really well.

Nobody around here is a "fan" of Microsoft. Don't know about the rest of the guys, but I'm not so small that I feel "repressed" by Microsoft. There are things I like, and things I don't like. I find it odd that someone would defend or oppose a computer program in such a drastic manner.

It is my guess that you haven't been "working in this field since before <I> was born." In fact, I would say that you got your Novel Certification 2 to 3 years ago and it's the only system you've worked on. Now that Microsoft Servers are really starting to be widely accepted, you and your elder Novell boys sit around the break room telling Microsoft jokes. And now you dislike all Microsoft products, and it didn't even require any original thought! Congrats!

You are one of the weak ones. The type of person who likes to follow...except you're a bit more dangerous. You're the little guy who stands behind his big friends spitting rude comments at your self-appointed enemies. You are a silly little man. If in fact you are a man.

Perhaps a better guess would have been "boy." Really, you haven't made a point that hasn't been made a thousand times over. In fact you didn't even make a point, you simply scratched the surface of what could be a point if you had the facts to back it up. Watch, I can do it too:

"You suck Mr. Novell. You can take your stupid Lotus Notes and shove it up your ass. It doesn't work and never has worked! NT rules! It runs way better and is way more reliable than your stinkin Novell bullshit! Plus it works better! I am very knowledgable and know more than you and therefore am correct!"

That was easy, and fun. Now I understand your existance. Thank you for making me stronger.

I will tell what I am you pile of steaming monkey crap. I am a novell CNE. You pathetic Microsoft loyalist.

How about this:

Who the hell are you Bill Gates personal ass licker?

Or maybe this:

Do understand that Wackmaster, and Sinuscheese.. You two are obviously butt buddys, who like the smell of ass in the mouning

So now you have met your match and are looking for a reprieve. Interesting. I was thinking that you had a little more character than that.

Not only have you now admitted that you don't know shit about using NT for recording, but you also have admitted to not being into music production at all!!! But that didn't seem to stop you from barging right on in in a very informative thread on this BBS and start telling everyone that they are morons, and pathetic, and Bill Gate croonies.

Dude, you need some serious medication. You have not only insulted people with far more intellegence than you, but have managed to bring out the more violent nature that is possible with such rediculous post's on a BBS. You need some help.

Dude, you have no idea the kind of people that are on this BBS. Some on here do progamming, some write nifty programs for the fun of it. We have a chemist on here. I point this out because you have no idea who is on here and opened yourself to some serious trouble. You would never know who might send you a nice innocent email with a nice virus in it. You don't know that maybe someone lives close by you and begs to differ with some of your descriptives about the members of this BBS. Hell, with a chemist on board, a nice chemical could be made to make you sick for a week of two I am sure. DO YOU SEE THE POINT MORON!!! ANY OF THIS IS POSSIBLE!!! YOU HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING!!!

It seemed like you were trying to maybe make an apology. That attempt stopped short with me with the very first line of your second to last post: Man you dudes are completly out of control.

I think you could do better than that. I think an apology without disclaimers would be appropriate. YOU ARE THE ONE OUT OF CONTROL!!!

Ed, a NT loyalist (since there is nothing else to use.... :))

O' Evil One!!! Please excuse my haste and pomp for performing duties that are so rightfully yours..... :)

This guy is a gem huh? Hey Slack, I believe you hit the nail on the head here about this guy.

Funny that he hasn't posted again. I guess little boys can't stand the heat.

Ed

Man you dudes are completly out of control. No I have never done any recording on Nt. I am so damn good at playing music that I don't any production. I hate overly produced bands, that suck live. Such as System Down. A big production CD and the worst band I have ever seen live. Music production is nothing more than a way to cover up mistakes. Other than Mixing it only fowls the original product.

Anyway my original post was not intended to start a war. I was stating my opinion based on my past 4 years of bad expirience I have had dealing with Nt. I hated it when it came out and I hate it more now. Since Microsoft is the only choice of Os, that suports a multitude of hardware devices, with Linux coming up from behind. There is not that much to compair it too. Novell is a better NOS no matter how you look at it. It has been around longer, and needs less maintance once it is setup properly. Novell just sucks when it come to marketing and monopolizing the market.

I do apologize if I offended anyone, I was only talking from past expierence. Also I have worked with a lot and I mean a lot of MCSE's. Who didn't even know how copy a file in Dos. I think that is pathetic, for some one to have the letters MCSE after there name, and not know how to use Dos.

The Captain

Well, it kind of sounded like you were trying to start a war. Let's review:

"NT SUCKS ASS, I hate Nt it the worst piece of crap ever written....Anyone who sticks up for Nt must a god damn MCSE. MCSE's are nothing but loosers whom are to stupid to go to college."

Them's fightin words if I ever heard any. I am not an MCSE. I have a REAL degree in Computer Science. I am thinking about taking the test, however, because it's really pretty easy and is something to add to a resume. I do agree with you, however, that some of these Microsoft Certified guys aren't the brightest...in fact I just had an arguement with one who used his Certificate as if it proved his misinformed point. Plus he was a real jerk about the whole thing.

If you're not into recording then why are you here? You'll find that a lot of us are into recording simply to capture the music that we have written over the years. You must have had SOME reason to be here.

Anyway, if you have a real reason to be here then I'm sure you'll find that people are fairly forgiving...though you've reached near celebrity status in the chat room. :)

Slackmaster 2000

Celeberty status eh? I was trying to help the fish, the guy who started this whole thing. Sometimes I have to bail him out when he gets himself into trouble. Otherwise there no damn reason why I should be here. I do play music, and I have thought about recording my stuff just so I can remember my songs because I have so many. I don't know if worth the trouble to do it digitaly. I may just use an old fashion one track cassett to do the job. Just because I work in the field doesn't mean that I believe that the latest technolgies are the best. I think one day Nt will be replace by a pencil and paper, and maybe the telephone. Nt has caused nothing but headaches for me in the last four years. I was venting my frustations not looking for a fight. If I have to deal with Nt for another four years then I may quit the computer field altogether. Then get a real career in petrolium distribution.

Is That Your Final Answer?
This is my first experience with flamers on
this board. I didnt know I was in the company
of such great public speakers. I have found out more about the people on this board from
one flamer than all the time I have been on
this board. I salute you Slackmaster and Sonusman. If I ever have a Question about recording or computers I will be asking you.
I have never seen such rhetoric in shooting
down a flamer. He really did crash and burn.
I will be laughing for a week. Talk about your snappy comebacks. You two deserve an
award. Peace to all. You too Mr. Novell
DuckHead

It's not usually like that here. Sometimes we just ignore 'em to death.

Congradultations you have beaten me into submission, same way Nt has. You have kicked my pathetic simple minded ass. You guys rule, something that Nt will ever do. You have shown me that I have no integrity what so ever, much like the programmers who wrote Nt. I will never have any pratical use to anyone as long a I am alive, also just like Nt.

The Captain

why do you even reply anymore captain? It is obvious you are only trying to be a jerk...

The guys here just care about recording, whereas you care about hating Microsoft. Go ahead care, just don't do the namecalling thing. I for one, just want to get my album done, and since I have found no recording software for novell, I think I will stick with NT.

MIKE

And "System of a Down" is a great live band... seen 'em twice...
Are you right about ANYTHING???

Jesus...

This is way the hell off topic by now, but as an MCSE, I'll throw my 2 cents in.

I would warn anyone using NT to be prepared to at least upgrade some of your memory. NT kernel likes to dump the whole OS into memory if it can, and that'll suck some resources. Otherwise, if you stay with a decent service pack (3 - 6, but avoid 4) - you'll be in good shape. Drivers are an issue. Check with any vendor you'd buy from for NT support. One more benefit - multiprocessor support (98 only supports one processor, as far as I know) - A dual Celeron board will come very cheap, and work great for recording - (just buy a buttload of memory - MEMORY!!!!! ARGGG)

98 is a joke. period. Something had to be released so Microsoft could continue making profits and elevating their stock prices. That's why they sold the second edition of it as well. If you have to use it, pull out I.E. with a utility like www.98lite.net (provided you don't surf with that computer)

95B/C could be a bit more stable. I'd say if at all possible, pull Internet Explorer out of the OS again. It's less of a resource hog, and I appreciate that.

Hope this gets read, being at the bottom of the flame pile and all.

RB

Oh-ho! Now that sounds like good news! And if I dump IE (which I never use), am I risking nasty knock-on effects after the operation?

I've heard a lot of stuff from all corners here. But let me state: I use Win 98 in my DAW and use NT on the server where I work.
They both suck, but if you're careful about what you try to do with each and maintain your system properly either will do the job.
Vegas Pro is amazingly stable on my Win98 system at home; NT at work crashes several times each day. Yes there are other variables that influence this very skewed sample but my main point is that 98 can work despite the compromises that were made in that release.
And I haven't forked over any money for the
B release. Just the principle of the thing.
Considering the pain I've been put through with succesive incarnations of Windows and the net worth of MS stock, they should be paying me to use their OS.

Oh yes it got read at the bottom of the heap. I upgraded OCT 1 from sx 33 with Win 3.1 to a P III 450 with Win 98. I absolutly hate it. I have never had to restart as many
times as I have had to in the last few months. ctrl/alt/del ought to be in huge letters and on huge buttons. They are the most important on the keyboard.

No offence or personal slandering implied but it seems like the people who really know how to use the various Windows flavours are having far less problems with them than others:-) It's the same with everything. I would probably have far more problems with Protools that with N-Track although Protools is "so much better".

I've used most windows flavours and think that they keep improving each time, with some exceptions like NT4.0 SP4 and early W98 etc. W2000 is my favourite by far I haven't had to restart my computer even once since I installed it, several months ago. Sure, the first beta versions were unstable but the released version hasn't given me any problems. I've used Mac a lot as well and had far more problems with it with bombs and whatnots. The problem with Mac was that you couldn't really fix anything, as the OS wouldn't let you.

On thing that most people seem to miss, especially with NT, is defragmenting the disk(s) (yes NTFS needs defragmentation like any other file system). Try running diskeeper on a daily basis and see if it helps. I'm pretty sure it will.

Also, might all the various freeware and shareware apps that are thrown onto the computer be the ones causing you problems? Tons of new drivers and background apps that eat resources and cause conflicts don't really help. I suggest, yet again, that you setup a dual boot with one OS (I'd use NT or 2000) strictly for recording and one (W98 perhaps) for games/office/Explorer/Netscape and other apps. Don't install too many plug-ins and "helpful gadgets", they'll just slow your computer down and mess things up, especially if you don't know how to _really_ unistall them. I use shareware and freeware as well but with moderation. There was a time when I installed every cool gadget I could find and I ended up reinstalling Windows _really_ often and hated the darn thing.

Finally, why do you who dislike Windows so much keep using it? Just scratch your disks and run Unix or Linux and be happy, or? Is it perhaps to difficult to maintain? Why use an OS that requires you to be a programmer? I wouldn't have time to learn all the details of the kernel etc. if I wanted to make music as well.

Just my two lengthy cents at the bottom of this flame war. Keep in mind though that I work for MS so you can just discard my opinion as I'm in liege with the dark side and get paid by making your lives miserably. After all, that's why we're here...

/Ola

BTW, if you want a share of the MS profit, just buy some stock. Remember to buy low and sell high though, it's the same as for any other company you know.

that says alot right there..

im not a MSNBC or anything , but i think maintenance is the key to surviving the game.. once i week i dump all my important recordings onto cd-r in nice little neat folders for each project.. then i wipe the disk and reinstall..

ive been getting good results (crashes and slow performance is rare) with windows 98 on my compaq no less (we all know the amount of crap they come preinstalled with) by using that method.. sure its a bitch reinstalling drivers.. sure it sucks having to downlaod ie 5 all over again.. sure it sucks going into msconfig and disabling background running programs.. sure its a bitch reinstalling all my software.. sure its not fun going into add/remove programs and taking out all the crap that came preinstalled that i never use.. but theres nothing worse than when you get a GPF on your screen in your favorite non destructive editing multitrack program and you havent saved anything yet.."THIS PROGRAM HAS PERFORMED AN ILLEGAL OPERATION AND WILL BE SHUT DOWN" ... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !!!

a clean OS is a happy OS..

ps.. everything that needs to be done after i reinstall windows is on a nice little .txt check list file that i burned onto the cd so that i dont forget to do anything.. ( just a lil tip )..also , putting all your drivers and all of your downloaded software updates/upgrades in one folder on the cd-r works pretty well too..

Thanks guys I'll try some of the suggestions.
I have noticed a change though by not having quite so many things open up on my desk top and I also try to keep the temp folder cleaned out. That does seem to help. I will however be installing NT 4.0 and upgrading to win 2000 (trying to save a little money ya know) on my recording computer. Sometimes I think it's human nature to bitch about whatever we have at the time!
