hi,

will we use DI-box between guitar/bass amp and the PA?

if yes, any reasons to do so? use active or passive one?

thanks!

I have recorded bass/guitar via DI, but it's the rare guitar that sounds decent with just its pickups being amplified.

My LP sounds ever so much better through an amp or (if I MUST DI, through a footpedal of some sort --depending on the sound I want).

My bass is routinely routed into the PA when we gig via the line out on my bass amp, which allows me to carry a relatively light amp to the gig and still get a lot of bottom out to the dance floor. The amp sits on a tilt stand, and serves as a bass monitor for the band.

I use a simple Whirlwind Imp II, I think it is, for the guitar; at practice I use one with the bass (my practice amp doesn't have a line out).

I routinely DI with both an acoustic and electric to the house system (contemporary worship).

Acoustic: I use a LR Baggs Pre/DI. I hear myself through the monitors. The Baggs has a nice notch filter, so I can get rid of any boominess easily.

Electric: I use a Trademark 10 (Tech 21). The little amp is essentially my monitor. It has a DI out from the Sans Amp circuit and really sounds nice through the house speakers. Actually surprizingly nice. The weak link is the little 8" speaker in the Trademark. So my stage sound is NEVER as fullfilling as the house sound... I suppose that's better than the opposite situation!

Note: I like using DI/splitters on amps in the rest of our team as well (drums, keyboards, bass) - BUT, some amps will have a real nasty buzz you'll have to fight with. In those cases, you will still need to mic the amp no matter what.

Oh, and I forgot...

If you have access to active DIs, they will generally sound better IMHO. We have a bunch of passives we do use as well, but the active ones just sound better.

Guitars get first dibs on the active DIs. Keyboard/drums may not be so fussy.

Hmm...

My passive basses are pure shit if DI:d without a decent box. But the one with active pickups is another sport, haven't tried to DI it on a gig, but sounds great recorded. the EQ of the active pickups work wonders.
