Ok so I have saved up some money and I am going to buy some of my first REAL recording equipment. Will this stuff work for good quality recordings? Oh, I am using Kristal as my recorder (seems to work fine). But here's a list of what i am looking to get:

Alesis MultiMix 16FXD 16-Channel Mixer with DSP
Nady CM 90 Cardioid Condenser Mic (x3) (Drums)
MXL MXL 990 Cardioid Condenser Mic with Shockmount (x1) (Drums and Acoustic guitars)
Audio-Technica DR-VX1 Dynamic Cardioid Vocal Mic (x2) (Vocals and Backup Vocals)

Thanks,
Derek

I'd call that decent recording equipment, but probably not "real".

Real gear:

Empirical Labs Distressor
Ureil 1176LN
Manley Massive Passive
API
Apogee
Royer R121

:)

A harsh reality check.

Reality check my ass.

DTBlalock, not matter what gear you announce you're thinking of picking up someone will slam it and tell you you need something better.

For sure the gear you've mentioned is budget and as such will not produce excellent sound quality but for someone starting out and (respectfully) with little skill in audio recording it'll do you fine (although I don't know anyhting about that mixer).

What about soundcard? I'd reccommend m-audio who make a few. The one you want will depend mostly on how many tracks you want to record simultaneously.

This BBS is a goldmine of information and there are many experienced audio engineers who are happy to give advice.

Be sure to use the search function before posting (your question has probably already been answered) and here are a couple of good links:

Good luck with it and enjoy

To answer your question derek,

I'm not sure what the specs are on the board you got, but make sure you have some sort of phantom power supply for the condensers.

It would be sad to realize you're getting no sound out of your investment. I've seen it happen time and time again. ;)

The quality of your recordings is going to depend on a lot more than just your gear. I don't see why you shouldn't be able to get a quality recording out of this set up. ;)
