okay sounds good guys....

Its not that i dont know any thing about recording...
i just havnt used this stuff in this format to much, only watch my father.
I have protools and use it and enjoy it, Also i have mostly been recording remixes mixes etc. With turntable decks, My bro mostly
Just recently ive goten into my friends band and said i would try to record them. I want to help their band because i think they could have a VERY good future....
One of my BEST friends is Elisha Anthony

Well yes her father is Michael Anthony, the base player for Van Halen, and my fathers company has many client Record Labels etc. so i wanted to get they off to a good start. I wanted to do as much as I could with the least amount of my Fathers help because i wanted to learn how to do it myself.... Like he did.
Yes i am very lucky for the resorces that he has left me and I hope to inprove on them as well.
Anyhow like i said I know how to mix etc just havnt used this format of equipment, YET.
Ill look into geting these mics if you think they are the best route I should go. Once i get the tracks laid i will post them here to see what you guys think

what kind of drum sound do you want to get?

If you will re-read harveys post he was reccomending what you would want to do if you were doing *rock* drums.

For the type of drums I like to record (lots of brushes.....big acoustic open sound)...

I'd use one of the 3 mic techniques...get those M49's positioned a bit back from the set, and get another condensor of some type, or a kick mic...

for an "organic" drum sound I bet the M49 would be tough to top.

Sorry if my first post grated you. I was just joking...mainly because I have no in depth knowledge of the mics you mentioned. A lot of people here would die to have Neumann mics...well...I guess you had to be there. Anyway--

I do have a digital mixer for you to check into: the Yamaha OV1. I have the forerunner, the Promix1. The OV1 has many more features and I imagine it borrows all the good stuff from the Promix. Total midi automation and very clean, clear EQ, as well as some good sounding effects. When I first got the Yamaha, I noticed more clarity and air in my mixes right off the bat. Though I haven't used the OV1, I'd bet its even better in many respects. I would check into it and see what you think. Then, there is the big brother, the O2. Thats become an industry standard, but I don't think its under $2000. Wait! I think they might be blowing the OV1 out if memeory serves me. Guitar Center maybe?

While Harvey made some excellent recommendations, it seems like you mis-interpreted his answer. He recommended three TYPES of mics, which is different from "3 mics". You will need two of the ECM8000's for overheads if you are doing stereo drum sound. And some combination of 57's and ATM 25's that add up to 4 for kick and toms. Maybe an additional 57 for the guitar amp too. Looks like between $600-700 worth of mics.

Actually, one ATM25 will do you fine. And one SM57. But get two, if you like. Actually, the more SM57s you have, the better. And the ECM8000s will be handiest in pairs.

Sennheiser, Beyer, Shure, Audio Technica, and AKG all make excellent dedicated kick drum mics. You can find people who will swear by any of them. There is no right or wrong in these kind of evaluations - just personal preferences in sound. I happen to own both the AKG D112 and the ATM25 and usually end up using the D112. But that's just my preference, it hardly means the ATM25 is inferior.

The crappier sounding the room, the better it is to have a mic on each drum. That's why I was suggesting a pair of ATM25's for kick and floor tom, and three SM57's for the snare and rack tom(s) and/or guitar amp. Also, i like stereo overheads, or else use Recorderman's overhead technique (one mic two stick lengths directly above snare, other mic two stick lengths from snare near drummer's right ear.)

Be prepared to spend a lot of time learning how to use the O1V. I personally have never had one, but I decided against buying one because the learning curve was so steep. If you can take the time and have the patience to learn it, then great. But if not, you might be better off looking for something less complicated.

Nah i dont think im gona sell the Neumanns....

I mean they arnt even mine and if my dad bought them he proly wants them for a reason....

Plus there is no point in selling them when i could use them also....

Im not to worried about the money issue because i have most of the equipment i need....

I just gota get these mics and a new digital mixer.....

Its so hard to figure out what mixer i want to get tho.....

There are SO many diferent ones ppl are telling me this 01V
and other ppl tell me other things....

so Harvey, what mixer do you sugest? lol
