Will going to school for recording help me more than this board?

Most likely, provided it offers hands-on techniques.
That's where the real learning comes in, by doing it.

I was thinking I would use the school more or less for networking...

I get a lot of practice recording with my so called clients. Maybe I can go to the school and get some paying ones.

Only one of the 6 people I know (who went to recording schools) actually got a gig as a direct result of the school.

I think schools can have value as far as hands on with some quality gear. Certainly some of the technical data related to frequency calculations, electical formulas and equipment repair/maintenance can have value.

However, I think the potential of getting a paying gig (or even networking) may be rather limited - in particular if you have to go to a different city to study.

If it's a good hands-on course so that you come out of it knowing how to mic a drum kit (for more than one style of music), and knowing how to mic acoustic guitar, grand and upright pianos, violin, double bass, brass, sax, etc., it will be useful if you've only had a narrow experience so far. If it gives you practical experience in using EQ to control sound (not just a set of formulas) that will be good too. One that gives you too much theory could be a waste of time. Theory helps but you don't need a PhD in electroacoustics to know where to point a microphone.

I find picking up wisdom from BBSs is a pretty slow way to learn (though far quicker than the days before the Internet) so I don't think you'd do any harm if you can find a good course.

Go to a school where the industry is. ie Los Angeles. Atlanta is also booming, although im not sure if there are any schools out there. Networking is key in the music industry and when the school is positioned in the hot spot, you will find that the instructors are actually part of the buzz. Pick their brains and make friends with them. Once again, it's all about who you know.
