Why, why, why?

Why is this happening???

I record a track on Home Studio 2002, following the metronome. When I record a second track while playing back the 1st track, I follow the metronome. But, when I play back both tracks, they don't quite go together and the 2nd track is usually behind the 1st by about 40ms.

Why does this happen when I play along with the metronome?

When I record, I record with a 20ms latency.

And, exactly what is the I/O buffer setting, and is that related to this problem?

Never seen that happen in 30+ cakewalk sessions/songs.

Is your PC up to the task?? Have you tried it without the metronome? (I usually create a click track in acid, import it to cakewalk, so when I go back to acid everything's already there and I don't rely on the software to do the job right... it's my old fashioned way of thinking, fortunately I don't use midi or do purely techno, otherwise this wouldn't work)

I've seen a similar problem with Guitar Trax. However, there's a slight variation. If I just record a few measures at a time everything is great, but the longer I record the further off what I'm recording gets from the playback. It can eventually get off by a whole beat or more.

Anyone else seen this kind of thing? I have a pretty fast PC (800 mhz), but a crap sound card.

Also, I'll second micro's questions:

And, exactly what is the I/O buffer setting, and is that related to this problem?

Computer is no problem. 1.5 g processor Pentium 4, 60 gb. harddrive, etc.

So, computer is not the problem.

MC,

What sound card do you have? One of my clients has a MOTU 324 and he had this problem. Getting newer drivers fixed it.

I have a Delta 44.

Also-Ethan...

Thanks for your link about the 'Sound Globs' you left for me on another thread.

Unfortunately that is something from an early Cakewalk program, and looks like I won't be using it, but thanks for the help on that.

Good Idea! I had a session the other night and for some reason (probably song-specific) I could not get my sound card to fire off the metronome. So I created a midi track on the fly and used that. It worked ok, but it took a couple of minutes.
After I read your Acid loop idea, it occurred to me that if I created a groove clip and saved it, I could import it and make it stretch to the project tempo. I could use the same clip on any song!
I'm gonna try this.
