even when bands had big ass kits, you can still play the stuff on a 4 piece.

Well, she modeled some of my guitars too. What can I say, it was a real good day.

Where are these guitars you speak of? I don't see any.

Well here is the my Les Paul Black Beauty.

And by the way, she loved my Big Kit. She says that size does count. So I think she votes for a larger kit. Lucky I had one, huh.

Hmmm... Still don't see it. Maybe it's the jpeg conversion, or something. :p

kits are smaller for the same reason guitar solos do not exist. Nobody likes a wanker on drums and no one likes a wanker on guitar.

This totally depends on what music you listen to (or play). Stuff I listen to is full of solos. Don't be so blinkered...

Juststartingout, I am also interested in your studio rates...

when i was playing drums in our band, i would gig with an 8 piece kit and a ton of cymbals. setup and breakdown were enormously long and a TON of work. i've tried playing a 4 piece kit, but honestly, i get bored with a small number of things to smack. maybe i'm not that creative a drummer.

still, from a "transporting" side of things, i'd LOVE to be able to play a 4-piece. breakdown after gigs always SUCKED......which is why i'm playing guitar now. :D

cheers,
wade

Tell that...

Nobody likes a wanker on drums and no one likes a wanker on guitar.

...to the wankers! (like me!)

As to the question, why the big change, numerous people have answered that; if you're talking about pop, what's on MTV and the radio, the music doesn't call for much in the way of drums. There it is.

Hell, the largest segement of the industry, rap/hip hop, doesn't even require a four piece.

As for me personally, there's a ton of frets on a guitar times six strings and I wanna be entertained and impressed; use as much of that thing as the song calls for and be cool about it.

Same for drums; I LOVE big drum rolls. There are plenty of guys who can make a four piece sound like a thunder storm but I say more is more. Turn that monster lose!

As an aside, isn't odd that the 'new' thing in guitars has been the 7 string?

And they tune way down and use one finger and a couple of frets.

well as nice as that kit is, it would so not fit into my bedroom! he he

I used to play an enormokit but these days I'm quite happy with a 4 or 5 piece in the studio. It's all about groove after all, and you should be able to do that on just a kick, snare and hats. Just look at people like Abe Laboriel Jnr and John Bonham - not huge kits but huge groove!

BTW juststartingout - Judy is beautiful!

Yea, and she howls with the best. That's why she is named Judy....lol

Nothing better than a hollow body and a 100 watt Marshall. It'll jump out of your hands.

I know it's impolite to ask a ladies' age, but what year is she? I have a 1967 Rickenbacker 360 that makes me smile just to look at it. I love it that instruments can make you do that!

Judy is a 1974 150DC. Walnut with no scratches.

The real lady of the group is Roxanne. She is a 12 string SG and the only one in the world. Gibson built it for me last year. They actually had to cut a custom neck for her. That young lady plays like a six, and has the sweetest sound that you have ever heard. She was made to match Merlin's dimensions.

If you click on the pictures, there is more info on most of them.

I play a 7-string (in standard tuning) and I use all of the strings and all of my fingers. If bass players (5-Stringers) can do it why can't I?
