Ed is definitely right aboutMackies EQ.....if you use the preamps and bypass the board you are ok....go thru the board and you can hear the difference.....but Im a cheapskate and will end up buying twice.....

Would it be even better/easier/whatever with a Neve or SSL? Almost certainly... How about a Ghost or A&H? possibly... Behringer? not bloody likely...........
On the other hand, I suspect the actual differences across the quality project-studio oriented boards (which neither the Neve or SSL are - as we know they are strictly PRO units) will be less significant than most would think...
Everyone has their personal gear anathemas, Ed's is Mackie, mine is Behringer.... but in the end, it's engineering skills that matter more than the gear. Any pro here can make some pretty fine recordings using a simple 4-track - yet that same 4-track in the hands of a novice may have some pretty horrendous results.......
We could argue to death about the technical minutae of why Mackie pres or EQ suck when compared to a Ghost or why either suck when compared to an SSL, but that discussion is will amount to maybe about 10% of the story....... the important part is knowing what to do with the damn board (ANY board!) in the first place!!!

I did get a new piece of gear this weekend. It's called a "pom pom ball". You know the pom poms cheerleaders use? This is like a 2 inch rubber pom pom. I use it as a stress ball during lectures and stuff. However, it's pink, which is probably why women tended to react to it like it was some kind of sexual equipment. I got comments like "you could masturbate with this" and "ehm, whats this, a clitoris ball"?

Sorry Bruce. 10 out of 10 engineers who have worked on my Ghost found themselves cleaning up the mess in their pants (I will not go there, use you imagination) after using it compared to ANY Mackie console!
It isn't a matter of skill at this point. The Ghost simply is superior in every aspect to ANY Mackie console. The OP amps are nicer. The eq's are much much more musical sounding. The faders actually have some linear quality to them. The Master buss doesn't crap out at +7. The overall sound is much more musical and smooth. Meters on the master deck aren't jumping all over the place. A lot of that digital harshness is gone.
I am learning to like Mackie pre's for certain things. Overall, I still think they are sort of cold and tend to not take care of weird transient stuff. But to mix on one is just plain torture!

I know Ed - I don't disagree with you at all, but you prove my point exactly... I'm sure you're correct about the OPs and possibly the EQs (although the EQ is more arguably a matter of taste), but again - we're talking about the 10% of the technicalities - what's going to matter the most is what to do with the board (any board) in the first place! My belief is that the mics used are going to make more of a difference than whether it is this or that op-amp...
Case in point, that remote drum-tracking session I wrote about last month or so - the (rented) board was a Mackie 1604VLZ (or XDR or whatever the hell Mackie's nomenclature-du-jour is!) The right mics, properly positioned gave me an amazingly warm yet crisp sound on all transients. I simply LOVE the way the overheads picked up the cymbals... smooth smooth smooth....
Would the Ghost have made me cum any faster? Maybe, I don't know... had I been able to A/B that situation, I bet the differences wouldn't be THAT dramatic. Noticeable, quite possibly, but in the end, it doesn't matter, 'cos I cut some stunningly smooth tracks and it was using a pretty bare-bones Mackie board. (And that board didn't even have an EQ defeat, so I couldn't take the EQ out of the circuit - which killed me, but I had to live with it!) Had I used less-capable mics or the mics I did use but badly-positioned, THAT would have contributed more to a lesser recorded sound quality than the matter of which board I used...
In a sense, the board didn't matter at all - I had the right mics thru decent, usable pres - it sounded good, so it WAS good!

First off Bruce, I am "giving" the preamp a better rap then anything else about Mackies. Great, so you got some decent enough preamps.
Now lets hear those mixes you are going to do through that sterile, cold, low headroom 24/8 you got! I wanna hear them.
Eq's a matter of taste? Are you suggesting you like the flavor? Yes or No. Nothing in between. The eq's on a Mackie are mostly unusable!
The next deal I am going to approach is that the console makes a BIG difference, even in the tracking environment. You are possibly going to monitor back through that Mackie, and with how horrible it handles a lot of volume, you are going to make subjective decisions about mic placement, mics, source sounds, etc....based off of a flaw mixer! Who the hell cares how good the preamp is if you can't hear what is really there while monitoring!
I want to hear the tracks. I want to hear them MIXED through those great Mackie gain stages! And those "matter of taste" eq's that nobody seems to care for (okay, nobody I normally associate with!)
Give it up buddy. I have yet to hear your work. Sneak up a mp3 to xdrive or something with a bogus name. That way you don't have to worry about the artist knowing about it. Hell, send it to me via email and I will post it descreetly on my xdrive account. I will claim that I broke into your place and stole a copy! No excuses now. Back your claims! You should have long ago to end the debate. As it is, you only have words and no tunes.....Let all decide for themselves. That IS the nature of having strong opinions, that you can back them up...
