Well, you know...not every guy needs a floppy eared mutt to feel manly....not that there's anything wrong with that....

It's a Blues brothers quote, right? I still don't get it after all these years, but I know it's a popular quote from the movie.

(never saw the movie, but who doesn't know the Blues Bros?)
The only good Blues Bros movie.

When Jake and Elwood are stuck in traffic backed up by Nazi marchers, they ask a cop what is going on, and he tells them, "Those bums won their court case, so they're marching today." Elwood scoffs, "Illinois Nazis," and Jake agrees, "I hate Illinois Nazis." This is a reference to a mid-1970s incident in which the National Socialist (abbreviated in German as "Nazi") Party of America planned a public demonstration in Skokie, Illinois (the population of Skokie was not only heavily Jewish but also contained an unusually large number of Holocaust survivors). After the local governments provided various impediments to the Nazis' march, they eventually took the matter to the Supreme Court, which led to a 1977 decision (National Socialist Party of America v. Village of Skokie) in favor of the Nazis' First Amendment right to Freedom of Assembly. The group subsequently did hold several Nazi rallies, but in Chicago instead of Skokie.

I didn't know the details but did twig to the reference and general meaning at the time.

Hi guys. Late to the party but I want in! I've got an old wiener dog that has survived a bad attack on a truck. The family will part with me first and I swear that dog communicated his wants better than 90 percent of the people I know. My fav cat was a stray calico that watched our tom cats from the woods for months before coming out at meal time. The toms went their way but Cali stayed till she finally passed. Not one of those cuddly, leg rubbing pests. We had an understanding and it worked for us. HomeRecording.... Oh, thought It was my weekly letter to Dr. Phil......

It's a warm and fuzzy sort of thread where you can be manly and yet have a good cry. :D
