nah nah, that's not what i'm saying.

I'd use protools to work at home on my protools sessions (which would be all school related as far as I'm concerned). Ideally, my school would offer a huge student discount for the software only (which is extremely common, and affordable). So that would take care of that.

I know I'll never be able to use vegas to work on another software's session (well, probably never, haha.)....although that'd be nice.... but having the standard be only accessable by certain hardware limits people a lot, that's all I'm saying I guess.

and yes I know I could use vegas and the digi racks or mbox, but again - if I had the digidesign hardware (or maudio), I probably wouldn't have even made this thread. ha.

you can still get it cheap though...through your school. M-Audio has the Transit which is like 70 bucks. And if you're at a recording school that is teaching Pro Tools I can bet you they have close ties with Digi and can hook you up. You can get M-Powered online via Digi (if you have the academic discount) for $200...you can probably even get it cheaper if your school has even better hookups. That's $270 for hardware and software. For you to mix at home. That's cheaper than what Vegas is running. And even if your school doesn't have Digi ties, they offer student discounts still.

All I'm saying is, if Digi offered the software as a standalone program that worked with everything, they would sell it for $500, $600...$1000 for it alone. And then you'd still need hardware.

but having the standard be only accessable by certain hardware limits people a lot, that's all I'm saying I guess.

The only way I can see it as limiting is if you are an audio freak who really needs perfect A/D converters and preamps. And if you are like that anyway...not matter what audio interface you buy you are never going to like the stock A/D converters or preamps, unless you are spending several thousands of dollars. That's the way everything is. This is why those products are geared towards "home recording". The industry still does not consider that professional recording. Look at prices for good, dedicated A/D/A converters...for word clock units....for standalone preamps.

The 002 does exactly what a person needs...offers 18 inputs. The Mbox2 offers exactly what a person needs....offers 4 inputs. The Transit offers exactly what somone needs...offers 1 input for $70. How is that limiting? Subtract $300 (for the software) off any Digi hardware product and you'll get roughly the cost of JUST the hardware.
Mbox2 ($450) - 300 = $150
002rack (1200) - 300 = $900

That's probably average if not cheaper than most of the other brands you will find for hardware.
Now someone tell me how this is all a rip off again?
;)

ya i think i'm starting to agree with benny here...

having the pro tools software alone would not solve your problem as you would still need to buy it. Being that it is apparently top of line, avid would probably price it that way to compete with nuendo and whatnot... even sonar 5 is $800 now. you could get something m-powered for cheaper than that.

I mean your argument definately makes sense, and probably even holds up better.

but in the position i'm in, school, student, low cash, not pro, home, etc. ha....I'm in a tougher spot.

what xstatic said really makes me think twice about everything though - that is true i didn't consider that.

I don't know, of course I still stand by everything I said because that's what I WANT, haha. realistically I know it probably won't me happening....

while i'm starting to lighten up here though...
benny - that m-powered protools, works just like LE? Can I go back and forth with no problem? Next quarter I'll probably be hoping to invest in a $50-$100 m-audio usb soundcard with m-powered protools, if I can find a good fit.

i'm totally the first person to understand money concerns. but just don't complain that Digi isn't offering you free software to work with the hardware you already have. You're gonna have to pay for something eventually to do what you want to do....it's the nature of the economical world.

Yes, M-Powered will open LE or TDM sessions just the same way the other programs do. There are a couple limitations (like the DV Toolkit doesn't work on MP)...but pretty much everything is the same. It looks the exact same too, it just runs off of different hardware.
