Why do people flip their condenser mic upside down?

Cos it's street, or whatever.

I've heard people talking about keeping valve mics upside down so the heat doesn't rise across the capsule.
Don't know how true that is.
 
Yes, it's a leftover from using tube mics....flipping them keeps the tube heat from hitting the capsule and making it change it's shape. I still do that all the time with my tube mics....not always with my other mics.

Of course, sometimes it's about positioning the mic better....and other times it just looks cool.
 
Some music was written upside down so one has to record it that way.
 
There was a long thread full of all of the reasons, jokes, and detailed explanations of the reasons for hanging a mic from above.

I tried to search for it myself, and the result is: The search engine on this site sucks... :facepalm:
 
Better projection from the vocalist by looking up, keeping the mic out of wind direction, space for music stand/lyrics, above said heat displacement for tube mics, it looks cool, and of course the whole gravity thing. There may have been a few more points that I have forgotten. If anyone remembers the thread, please post link. :)

Plus, beer in US spills in a downward (towards Earth) direction. Not sure how the Aussie's keep it down. :confused:
 
Beer is so revered down here that nobody dares spill it. Spilling beer is the last capital offence on the Australian statute books.

Mind you there is a Carlsberg factory here in my home town! You can have as much of their dishwater as you like!

I think one of the reasons is that you can hold the words under it without hitting the stand.
