Why did you start singing?

Mines a rather funny story,

I used to gather with 2 of my friends (another guitarist and a bassist) we used drum tracks and jammed over them or simple loops and we always stuck to our instruments.

One fine day in one of our jams I just said to myself "why don't I start singing?" so I took a big breath and started to sing in falsetto and improvising some funny lyrics, they seemed to like it and had me writting lyrics while they came up with chords so we'd start jamming and while one stuck with the chords and the other with the solos I was mainly busy singing the song I wrote a few minutes before the song started.

Things evolved and we started doing jams where one of us was holding a dictionary and using it to find words and topics that he based the song in. My particular lyrics always ended up having a comical tone, such has one time where I sang about the addiction of drinking or about the revenge of a peach... or even a crazy song about a man who backed a cake and accidentally burned and starting a mad runaway from his girlfriend (all this when I was sober LOL)

My singing isn't really good but I'm trying to improve it as best I can. The best about voice is that its the most portable instrument of all! It's with you right now and you use on a daily basis : )

PS: now I'm trying to record some songs on my own and adding several voice lines made by me. The idea could work if only I could get started lol
 
I have always sang/sung along to albums in seclusion for as long as i can remember, but as i began recording my own music i needed to add vocals. I still will only do this in seclusion, but the reason for my singing and writing is in my signature...
 
A friend and I went off on our own to do a project. I play guitar, so I got stuck with singing. I wouldn't say I sing though, but I try.
 
ive sung since i remember .. but it was dylan and leonard cohen who really inspired me to write and sing my own songs
 
Two experiences. One when I was really young, Mark Baxter sang in a school play at my elementary school. He is a big rock vocal coach (bands like aerosmith, googoo dolls) , and a hardcore devotee to the art of song. He sang the tune Rawhide, which I think is from an old TV show "rollin rollin rollin, rawhiiiiiide"
Anyway, the way he sang and owned the stage when he performed this was the first time I had anyone actually truly express themselves in front of others with confidence in an excellent way. I had very low self confidence at the time, so that became kind a benchmark for me to strive for.
The second experience I had was later on in highschool, I was in the school chorus. I worked up the courage to do a solo one day in class. It went really well, I hit some strong sounding notes, and everyone encouraged me by telling me that I should sing out more.
 
Hell if I know!

My parents have tapes of me singing when I was what... 3 years old? Funny stuff. Also, on a big family trip when I was five, my parents offered each one of us a toy-gift-whatever... and all I wanted was that they found me a microphone! They got me a yellow wireless one full of buttons... and I still have it :)

Also, isn't singing loud the best thing to relieve stress? And isn't singing live with a band such a thrill? I love this thing with all my heart, always have and I guess I can say that I always will :)
 
I started singing in my car. I never thought I could sing at all but ever since the day I got my license, loud music in a car always makes me sing, and now I sing a bunch ( maybe not like an expert.) The car is a good place to practice haha.
I'm less shy about it now, but I remember when I was firsts starting to sing, my plan was to record vocals in my vehicle lol. I didn't actually do it though as there are no outlets in there.
 
I started singing because I was sick of having to rely on other people to sing in my bands. There were a handful of people I knew who could sing well and they all were a pain to work with or weren't into what I was doing. I decided, learn to sing and I can at least play acoustic gigs with out having to rely on someone else.
 
I started singing because it's my escape from the stresses of the world, especially job and school related
 
I used to listen to a clock radio while I slept when I was a kid. I woke up one morning when I was 4, singing a song that was playing on the radio. Been singing ever since.
 
I happened to have two opera singers for parents. Oh. Also. I was in some operas too. :D Then I screwed up my voice trying to sing along to the Lostprophets while going through puberty and classical singing is hard now. :P
 
why I started to sing

I'm not terribly tall. My guitar player, who was about 6'5, loomed over me and said, "sing or die". I started with the easy stuff, more talk than soar, pop fluff like La Grange and Money For Nothing, hey it went over. After a lot of years at it, I finally found how to work my voice.
I learned the most just from working with good singers, I was fortunate (but I Could play bass a bit). I'm no Steve Perry (or even Jon Bon Jovi), but there was a time I thought Jon Anderson was impossible. I just worked at it.

If you think you hate your voice, are you just comparing it to your heroes? They've had the advantage of many years of hard work to get themselves on your speakers.

It's an instrument, just like a guitar or a horn,or a computer with DAW. Just because it's built in, doesn't mean you automatically know how to use it.
Hate it? Fix it! Figure out a way for it to sound good to yourself and your friends. Talent doesn't come from everywhere, but it Can come from Anywhere (I'm paraphrasing the critic from the movie Ratatouille).
 
I can't remember when i wasn't singing. I can't imagine not singing. thanks
 
Truck blowed a head gasket, dog died, crops got washed away when the levee broke, and the ol' lady dusted her broom. I took to drinkin' and honky tonkin.
 
I started singing after I realized I had a somewhat decent voice. I know training would be a great boost for me, but my voice gets me by for now. Besides, as far as time and money goes, I just can't right now. Perhaps sometime in the future I'll look into that.
