Why can't i record on the right side too instead of just the left?

hey experts,
if some one can help it would be cool. i can only hear my self on the right side of the stereo if i use the effect "right". However when im recording, only the left side can be recorded. What's even more weird to me is that when i pan all the way to the right nothing can be recorded. Please help.
