Heh. My gut says don't do midi drums for other peoples' songs anymore, or you could be wasting a lot of hours! Excessive china? I think there are maybe 2 hits. Ah screw it, the programming just isn't worth it anymore. I better get my ass into a band again! And stick to guitar. Thanks again for the honesty guys. This DIY shit isn't worth the time anymore, except maybe as demo for a band.

I would like to hear what one of you would do with this if anyone dares to volunteer....

I was just teasing you about the china.. :p (as always  )

If I had to put drums to this song, I'd get a very nice studio set and mic it perfectly and then pretty much play the original drum track. The only complaint I have about the original track is that it's fake drums. I might add a minor change up here and there, and add some dynamic (open the hi-hat a little on the chorus, etc.), but for the most part, I'd leave it as is.

I (almost) can't believe I'm saying this, but there are some songs that, when it comes to drums (and everything else, for that matter) less is better. The main attraction of this song is the smokin' great guitar parts, and, of course, the hooky vocal part... it's just kinda distracting to have a drum part in there that says, "hey.. look at me... over here... look at all the stuff I'm doin'." :p

but don't get bummed aboot it man... :p it's just that they didn't fit this song... usually your drum parts are great, but this one is a different style than your "solo" stuff, and it does't need such a creative drum track.

aw man, don't stress over it... we've all had those days where you put in many hours of free time to a song and it all goes to hell... imo you've still got the song of the year here, Tom. You and Jeff should get the trophy :D

Hey man, don't dare quit on us! :) Your stuff is some of the only stuff many of us listen to DAILY... shit, I listen to this song and "Chrysalis" daily, no lie. The drums on Chrysalis are excellent, and they fit really well...

Besides, this is only an opinion... who cares what I think? Sam and others love the drums... This could be a better version than the first... from the looks of this thread, it's a lot of mixed reactions to the new drums...

I would like to hear what one of you would do with this if anyone dares to volunteer....

Almost sounds like "let's see if you could do better" :D lol... you're right... you program them drums better than anyone here, and I'm not just saying that... but I'm with WATYF in thinking that a more subtle drumline would work better...

It's really only your opinion that counts on this, anyway man...

PS: Don't stop! :D

i would like to make the observation that you shouldn't only notice the comments where people didn't like something about a mix....you should give equal weight to the people who liked the very same thing. In this case there were folks who liked the drums and looking back at the thread the two opinions were about equal in number. So why assume that the negs were the right ones. Why not assume that the positive replies were the correct ones? In my own post I said I basically like the drums and I personally would have liked a different hi-hat but that's all. And, for that matter, who the hell am I? There were others that liked the hi-hat and if, for example, you listen to the great albums of Stevie Wonder where he played all the instruments....he did that same thing where he tracked the different drums at different times and so ended up with idiosyncratic drum parts that a drummer wouldn't have played in that way. But his albums were some of the very best.

When I post a response, I'm just giving opinions on stuff for your consideration and for future applications. But that's all they are and that's all everyone elses' opinions are too. So don't you dare quit doing this stuff just 'cause the 'drum nazis' were on patrol on any givin morning. If you do, I'll have to quit critiqueing songs and the forces of chaos will quickly take hold of the world. :D

oh man... you sound pretty bummed sluice. :(

one thing that helps you become better is not to take constructive comments personal towards your abilities. they are there to help you grow...
man.. I suck at tons of stuff at recording... i just try to get better day to day.

if you lived nearby id tell ya to come on over for a beer and relax :D

ive been working my ass off on this project 12 to get to you by Fri.
I hope your not backing out on me :(

See............now look at the outpouring of love and affection! :)
And participant..............if you like Chrysalis now.......wait 'till you hear the 12" remix. It's gonna be awesome. ;)

Man, I'm sorry I stressed on you guys. You're too fuckin cool. I am honored that someone would ask me to add to their great music, and Jeff's parts are beautiful. I think I'm starting to snap because all I think about is music. And maybe music. And I want more TIME for music. Like I get home from working out in the cold and I try to lay down high vocal tracks in the couple hours I have. Not cool! I need a rich uncle to pay me to practice! Don't we all...

And by the way, that was an invitation to do drums...especially real ones. Jeff's written some great guitar parts and they deserve real rhythms to support them. I've just hit a wall and I hate that! :D

One of my best friends was also one of the best drummers I've ever heard. We used to play in quite a few projects. He died earlier this year. But damn if he was still around to work with! During one of our last nights hanging out together just before he left for the Great Gig in the Sky, he spent most of his night hammering on me that I need to be doing more with music, and he was right. I had just started home recording and I was eating his every word. I had been out of the scene for so long, I had forgotten how great it was to be living the musician's life, or the life of a 28 year old for that matter! :)
Anyway, I don't know why I'm spilling this, other than to show where at least some of my pressure comes from. Time. Any of you who heard "Run for Your Life" and "Rhythms" now know the story behind them. And I just got done telling you not to be so sensitive, Sam!

Sorry I broke guys. And sorry for the rant.

I'm going to work on another song now. Jeff, I think we should see about a drummer on this though. It's worth it, like they said.

I could hear everything very well, Sluice.
Nothing seemed to drown out anything else.

Great seperation via panning.
The guitars sound friggen good. Vocals are up front and blend.

Nice job.

I too was thinking...

'There never seems to be enough time,
to do the things you want to do,
once you find them.'

Drums??

I'll piss off drummers for sure with this next comment, but I listen to a LOT of music, and drums don't make a song great or shitty; they can help a bad or a good song sound better, but c'mon...we're talking about PERCUSSIVE NOISES.

Anyway, I'm just stopping by again to say that this is exceptional.

Thanks again you guys. I'm calmer now :D
But I still couldn't leave it alone, and I posted a new MP3 with a few changes. Would just like to know if it's going in the right direction. And I promise I'll move on to something else tomorrow. :) I'd still rather have real drums on it too though.
You guys are such a huge help.

FYI...

Tom,

There are two files up there:

Why Are You Still Here?
Why Are You Still Here (no question mark)

I'm guessing it's the second one?

Oh damn...should be no "?" Sorry bout that. Meant to just update the file! Thanks for trying Chad.

BOY HOWDY!!!

Now these drums kick some serious ass.... and they're subtle... that kick drum sounds like the real deal.... absolutely awesome.

With the improved vox, definitely my fave of the three versions I've heard... maybe you could put out both... so everyone is happy? Or, maybe they'd like this one too?? Anyway...

HR.COM SONG OF THE YEAR! HR.COM SONG OF THE YEAR! HR.COM SONG OF THE YEAR!!

Chad

I knew ya could do it brother :)

sounds alot better!

great job ... your awsome man!

I know... now you hate the song and you want to kick my ass

:D

hehe

nice.. it started great and got even better.. damn.. this is a really good mix too.. superb job.. I love the guitar sound.. Who would dare complain about it now! :D

I'm hearing a lot of little things that I didn't notice before.. Like I said, you two make a great band.. I have no suggestions on how to make this any better..

Hey Tom, could you do some drums for me dude!?!! :D

Seriously!

---------------------------------------- Off Topic--------------

I just got the whole Waves mastering software dealio.. The L-1 Ultra Maximizer seems to be a great way of getting my mixes loud..

and distorted!

Would just like to know if it's going in the right direction.
Roger that. This tune is a challenge from a drum programming standpoint... you've got a tough job. And you're definitely going in the right direction. I like the kick and snare sounds. On the seriously nit-picky side: the hats sound just the slightest bit "fuzzy" or something to me and you could probably add some more subtle touches by adjusting the dynamics on some of the fills.

From a practical standpoint: this tune is good as it is. There are a lot of good things going on here, from the performances to the quality of the recording. If there's something bugging you about the mix, definitely keep tweaking it. If some of the suggestions here strike your fancy, try 'em out. If there's nothing you hear that's unsatisfactory, then the mix is done. A million different things might sound "better" to a million different people. Whatever you end up with is going to be solid, I can guarantee it. It can be easy to lose sight of that when the critical listening hat is on.

Damn, you have such a distinctive vocal sound! Excellent!

I didn't think the drums sounded bad at all. The overall sound is great on this tune, and the tune itself is excellent!

:) -- Five Stars!
