Hey guys, this is the collab I'm finishing with Jeff Marcomb. I'm working on the drums and shooting for as realistic sounding as possible. I'll also take any other mixing suggestions you have!

Thanks as always!

Tom

Tom you burn out!!! You didn't enable it to be played!!

There is no play or download button...

sounds great.. the drums sound really good, but maybe the bass drum is too low.. As far as the drums sounding 'real', the high-hat is always a dead give away.. That doesn't mean it sounds bad, because it sounds great... great for electrics..

I will add it sounds better than any drums I have recorded..

this is an excellent tune..

one more thing..

I have found that this clinic can be very picky about drum sounds, and that is a cool thing BUT, the average Joe Shmoe doesn't care.. I have never had anyone complain about my drums except people from here.. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bitchin, just making an observation..

This song sounds excellent all the way around..

that statement, basically hits the nail on the head.

not sure about a harmony vocal line or two...but it DOES sound good.

i had no problem with the drums...they sounded real enuff to me....mixed a little low for me, but i like a kick that you feel in the chest and a snare that takes your head off...not exactly what this song needs.......

im rambling.....it sounds great....cheers to collaborations......

:)

yeah... the drums are way better than I can do ;)

I do think the drums dont have alot of energy, mainly because its not a real drummer.
The high hat might need to sit further in the mix and the snare and bass need a bigger sound.
I was listening to some Collective Soul and heard some cool ideas that they use... like a delayed/reverb snare panned right w/ dry snare left... creates a bigger sound.
Your fill ideas worked very well.
The first "About You Now" overdub didnt fit that well  ... IMO
"The Piece from piece" overdub.. was Nice!
Your best bet is forget you ever came... overdub.. should be left out... your natural vocals sound way better! :)
Sometimes I wonder if the drums are a little too busy?
You nailed your harmonies near the end.. sounds really good.

You did a great job... just needs a minor tuneup

All suggestions are subjective... :)

back to project 12

Drums sound great to me. I really scrutinized the mix and this is what stands out to me:

:58 and 1:43
the ech effect here clutters. It is a little distracting. I hear the intention, but it just seems a little off

2:46 to 3:05
harmonies are a touch out in this area, but not really bad

Man, this is great!! What an awesome song! I am looking forward to some more collaborrations from you two!!

BTW, the song is about 4:06, the stream says it's 8:06:confused:

OK 2 major issues I'm hearing...

1) Drums not big enough (easily fixed) and hit hat needs to sit back.

I held back on the drums, particularly the kick, mostly because I didn't want to scare those beautiful little guitars away. I'll re-examine that, as to whether not a ballsier kit (my normal kit) would work here. I just don't want to turn Jeff's sweet tune into a fiasco. :D

2) Which harmonies are off? I realize I have some tension there, but which would you recommend changing?

As for busy-ness of the drums, I wondered myself. I might start looking for local drummers pretty soon.

Thanks a shitload guys!

I don't find the drums too busy personally. Mainly I'd like to hear a more continuous hi-hat. No drummer would play such a start-and-stop hi-hat. Whatever you do...it should be more consistant.
The song's up to your usual high standards and the performance is nice. I too hear a few pitch issues in some of the vox. Not bad, mind you, but there nonetheless. The guitar solo sounds very nice and I also like the drum sounds. I'm with Gidge on the drum sounds; they sound real enough to me too, and Sam pointed out that the kick's too low. I guess that's about all I hear and none of these are too bad, they could just use a little tweaking to get them just so. But it sounds good already.

Thanks again guys

Sorry Jeff, I'm trying to rush this out to ya before the deadline but it ain't happening. Not enough time after work for me with the recent move and all. I know there are some bad spots in the vocal (there's always bad spots in my vocal- I need a lot of practice), but I was hoping it would work because I just don't have time to fuck with it.

Thanks for all the help guys. End thread. On to the next one. :D

that's exactly what i was thinking when i listened to the drums. but i also agree that most people outside this bbs wouldn't react the same way. those comments are product of overanalysis. great work.

i do really think this might be worth getting a real drummer involved though, i think the right person could really add a lot to this, like stewart copeland maybe :) ?

Yeah, we are the drum nazis here:D This sounds like a song to me. Excellent is a word that comes to mind. I love it.

The drums didn't bother me any. I think they work fine in the context of the song. I think overall it sounds much better than the last version of this I listened to. The vox echos do get in the way, but before you get rid of them entirely, try panning them to one side or the other. That worked well for me in a similar situation.

I seemed to like the original mix more(although not by much)..i don't know the drums were much much simpler and thats just my thing i guess =p. Anyhow, this song is awesome just the same!

I WANT MORE COLLABS NOW! haha =))

you know I love you man........ but

(that's never a good way start to a post.. :p)

I liked the original drum mix better... :(

This one's too busy... the hi-hat in the original fit a little better... I guess it's all personal preference.. but I'm not too hip on the snycopated cymbals and the numerous tom hits here and there... (and the excessive china boy usage... ;) )

sorry... had to say it... :p

I would say that the vocals sound better... the harmonies are arranged better in this mix... there's a couple odd vocal delays that happen, but other than that, the vocals are a step up.

the tune still rocks, man... but that's just my $0.02

dammit

Now, I'll sound like a copycat... but agreed... I love the original drums. These aren't bad; in fact, this mix isn't bad. But the original seemed almost perfect... with some kinks in the vox to work out...

You seem to have fixed most of the vocal issues... but imo the original drums worked better

Go with your gut, man :o
