They have to make them expensive or all of the metal bands would over use them. Tuba apps were the next logical step since you can only down tune guitars and bass so much before the strings fall off. Sometimes you just need to get a few cents lower and the tuba apps give you that extra nudge over the cliff that you just can't get strictly by down tuning.

Expensive? You can get tuba soundfonts and SFZ to play them for free...

Tuba apps are expensive but you can get a sousaphone app for a lot less.
