Well, Monty, if you look anything like your avatar, I don't think you have to worry about your clients staring at your rack. Ummm, er, I mean your OTHER rack... oh...

Never mind!

When I was a young lad before hit twenty, I did have a similar appearance. Time is cruel...oh the humanity... :(

Well said. I'll admit to having a couple of pieces just because they look cool. One is a big DJ rack mixer I bought for $5 at the swap meet. I've never even tried it and never intended to. I just wanted something to cover up the side of a rack cage I use to sit some stereo equipment in. You guys won't tell anyone will you? :(

Monty,

Thats actually a good Idea.

Those damn rack panels you can buy to cover the empty rack spaces are like $12.99 each... Why not put some eye candy there, even if it isn't useful.. Looks good to the visitors.

As you may have gathered, there's a reason I have no wife nor current girlfriend - they get too jealous of my "mistress" called music. If you have a life, you may not want to follow my example :D .

Both hobbies, I suppose, can get rather expensive. :D The gear will get you more return on investment, though, in most cases. :D

you spend some time with some esoteric piece and fall in love with it bec it so clearly outclasses what youre currently using, it becomes hard to go back. You become painfully aware of how the playing field is truly not level.

I know exactly what you're saying. On the positive side, I'd say there's only one real clear-cut example of that for me. And it's name is the Empiracle Labs Distressor. Once you use it, you realize the RNC and all your comp plugins are but toys.

It's like that with lava lamps - first you think they're great, but then when you first get an oil wheel projector in your studio, you realise that the old lava-lamps just don't cut it in the same way anymore.

I'm currently thinking of installing a motorised disco ball and spots...

For hobbyist, though I just think it's simply an addiction. People crave the joy and excitement of getting new things. Most dudes like things as much as chicks like shoes and crap. Getting a new mic or effects box can be a thrill. Once that thrill wears off, we just need to keep buying more things to keep the thrill going.

G.A.S.

Gear Aquisition Syndrome.

There is no cure but bankruptcy, or maybe the old lady choppin' up your plastic...

There's some truth to that! The other day, my son (7 yrs. old) asked me where mom was. I told him, she was out doing "girl stuff". He asked "What kind of girl stuff?"
I said, "She's out shopping for a purse!" (she wasn't really, it just sounded like typical "girl stuff") Then reveled in my thoughts of how someone could actually shop for something like a purse? Why not just pick one up somewhere?

You can't do that with audio gear though. :p

Who says you can't? :D
