Why a Drum Riser?

Correct; it was to raise the whole drum kit. I'd have to see if I have any pictures of it - I recall the idea originally being in Modern Drummer magazine back in the mid 90's, when they ran a step-by-step pictorial of how they built the exact same thing.

And yes, it was small! I was using a Gibraltar rack at the time, and I had blocks of 1x2 screwed down to hold the bass drum spurs from sliding off the front, with another strip to keep the throne from sliding off the back!

Me personally, I have no problem getting thunderous tom sounds and a deep kick. For one, I use the right drums/heads for the job. Secondly I know how to tune my drums. Thirdly, I don't choke my shit down with pillows, blankets, tape, and and muffling. I think a lot of people would be surprised with how big their kick could sound if they'd just take the king-sized sleeping bag out of there.

I just saw this thread.... Your kit IS on a riser. It's suspended on the wood framed second-floor of your house, you silly boy. It does the exact same thing my riser does.

You should see how little shit I have in mine. Just a a little piece of auralex at the bottom. I totally agree. Pillows/sheets/couches/snuggies are all bad ingredients inside a bass drum.

And, I do close mic all my drums. There is a big difference. Not so much with recording though, the difference is actually more with "room sound". And it's a fake effect. What supercreep wrote is bang on. The riser is actually enhancing the low thump of the kit, and I need that, since my kick is smaller than most peoples rack toms.:D

I'm pretty suspect at the science. Like I mentioned before, I just notice a difference, I don't really stand behind the so-called "science" of the whole thing.

Dude, my kit is on the ground floor sitting on ceramic tile. Well, there's a rug, but that's it.

Ceramic tile, on wood. Same thing;)

(Just saying)

I did a vanity search and figured I'd respond to all these mentions of my great self, so calm down. I'm just tying up lose ends.:D

I haven't even checked "voxvendor" yet. I'm saving that for this evening. "vox" too.:D
