ok i know ill regret this and will get flamed but here goes, i tottaly i agree with analytical man on this, we are all allowed to state our opinions but what i dont understand is you guys are calling some very good drummers overated, how are they overated, what is it because they are making more money than you? are you saying the drummers are overated our the band is overated?
how many people do you actually hear saying gee that drummer is awesome, i rarely ever hear many people talk about drummers.
truth is if the guy can get it done in the studio and then on tour and is still in one piece then he is a good drummer. disturbed is selling millions of albums wright now as i type this and from what is said they are doing it with a overated drummer lol. obviously it dont bother there fans that there drummer is overrated and has lazy hands or whatever. this was not meant as a flame to anyone i just wanna understand who the hell is overating these guys, hell i listen to disturbed everyday i i didnt even know the drummers name till i read this thread lol.

Hey Pratt i totally agree with some of the drummers you mentioned, not all because i haven't heard all of them. But like Terry Bozzio, that guy is ridiculous. It almost makes you think about calling it a day. I know there are tons of drummers out there that are better than most drummers around today. But i was actually talking about drummers from the Homerecording world. And i meant it in this way, alot of people here are really critical of playing and abilities, and i just wanted to hear some music from homerecorders that are the shit on drums. Most of what i hear on this forum, although it is really good playing, is also really basic. I just think that people are too harsh and general sometimes. And i know everyone has there opinion, but i don't think it is always vocalized properly. I wouldn't say anybody sucks on anything or wasn't that great if i couldn't play as good as them. that is what i am getting at. Some here think that Dave Lombardo sucks, i don't but even if i didn't care for him i wouldn't say he is over rated or sucks if i myself could not play equal to or better than him. I hate polls...they always get me into trouble. Take care everyone.

understood...I didn't realize that you were asking us homerec's to show you our impressiveness...

my question to you then....really basic drumming can't be impressive? I gotta completely disagree with that. Steve Gadd played some real basic stuff with Steely Dan - but those basic beats were so tasty and well-executed that they are absolutely impressive. terry bozzio can play a very basic straight ahead beat (see his playing on Jeff Beck's guitar shop) - but it's so slammin' and he executes so well that, to me, is impressive. I guess that our definitions of 'impressive' differ completely.

having said that - I love dave lombardo, he has been a huge influence on me (his drumming in 'ghosts of war' off of south of heaven is amazing)...and he can play a million miles an hour.

I can understand where you're coming from....when I was a teenager I was heavily into those 'neoclassical' guitar 'gods' and thought that playing a thousand miles an hour was incredible....but then I finally realized that it's not about how many notes you can play in a second...but how you can make those notes feel...when a guitar player can give you chills with one note - that's impressive. michael angelo (of NITRO fame) can't do that.......Jason Becker, one of the dudes from that genre who has incredible feel, can.

sorry man, I just reread what I just wrote and it's about the most rambling piece of shit post that I've ever written. but I hope you get my idea.

peace
pratt

On the subject of Stewart Copeland I tend to compare him to something like Sean Kinney on Jar Of Flies.. Stewart Copland never impressed me but I am not a full time drummer either (just piddle). There is so much going on in those songs on Jar Of Flies and I looks like he is just sitting there. It is Awesome!

I agree that simple, and basic can be great. I also think that flashy and technical can be great. I think there are good drummers here, but i don't usually see the flashy technical player. i love basic playing , and totally power and speed playing.I hope that this clears up any thoughta that i am a dick, because i try not to be. And again Bozzio is awesome, so i Lombardo...one of my favorites.

alex van hagar....er I mean stewart copeland...

oooppps what I really mean is neal peart...:D
what's the point?

That's ironic seeing that Neil's nick name is Pratt! Or where you joking?

And it's Ne"I"l.... not Ne"A"l! :D

I think Steve Gadd is good, but he gets a little ridiculous on some songs. Most of the songs are pretty basic. But every once and a while he'll throw in somethin totally unecessary ha. But he is very good and I respect him. He loves triplets with the toms and kick drums. Good stuff.

Just my thoughts:

I think disturbed's drummer is secretly Lar's Ulrich's little padawan learner. If you want to go with the argument that Disturbed's drummer is taking it easy and doing whats right for the song, fine ill accept that but please tell me why he has to look like he is straining his ass off to play that shit. Most of the fills that hes doing with two hands, a mediocre drummer could pull off with one and without the painful grimmace. Hes like def leppard's drummer but with 2 arms.
Also, just because you can't do something better than someone doesn't mean you can't distinguish the difference between someone like the guy in disturbed and lets say Danny Carrey or even Stuart copeland. Alot of these guys on the BBS may not be great drummers but im certain that the amount of hours they put in recording isn't just developing recording skills. I know ive picked up alot in the vocal area through recording other singers, and i can't sing for krap. So because i can't sing does this mean i can't tell when someone is out of key or that there melody sucks a fat one? Same type thing with drummers. If your around it enough youll pick up on it. Thats my opinion at least.

did anybody else see this post at audioforum?
It had more GAdd stuff.....pretty funny. If you know where it is please drop me a line

MESHUGGAHS DRUMMER OVER-RATED...NOT REALLY HE IS QUITE GOOD. I WOULD CHALLENGE ANY DRUMMER ON THIS BOARD TO TRY, AND I STRESS THIS, TRY AND PLAY A COMPLEX MESHUGGAH TUNE. I DOUBT THAT IT WILL HAPPEN. AND WHAT IS ALL THIS TALK ABOUT NERVOUS DRUMMERS. I AM NOT TRYING TO START ANY ARGUEMENTS OR FLAMING, BUT THE GUY FROM DISTURBED IS QUITE TALENTED. HIS FEET ARE EXTREMELY GOOD, BUT HIS HANDS SEEM TO BE A WEAKER POINT THAN ANYTHING. AND EVEN AFTER THAT BEING SAID HOW CAN YOU SAY THE TIMING OF CERTAIN GUYS SUCK WHEN ALL OF THE MUSIC THEY MAKE THE DRUMS ARE ON THE MONEY. AND IF ALL OF THESE DRUMMERS PLAYED AS HARD AS THEY COULD THE MUSIC WOULD MOST LIKELY COME OUT AS BEING CONTRIVED, EMPTY...MUCH LIKE ALOT OF NEOCLASSICAL GUITARISTS THAT ARE ALL TECHNIQUE AND NOT ALOT OF FEELING. MOST PEOPLE MAKE JUDGEMENTS ON INDIVIDUAL PLAYERS BASED ON THEIR BANDS...NOT EVERY DRUMMER THAT IS IN A BAND PLAYS AS COMPLEX OR AS MIND BLOWING AS THEY CAN. THE GOOD ONES DO WHAT IS BETTER FOR THE SONGS. AND ON TO ANOTHER THING, WHERE ARE ALL OF THESE CRITICAL DRUMMERSON HERE...I LISTEN TO STUFF ON HERE AND THE DRUMS ARE EITHER ELECTRONIC, OR REALLY BASIC. NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT BUT I WANT TO HEAR SOME DRUMS FROM SOME OF THE SHIT TALKERS ON THE BOARD. SOMETHING THAT IS JUST TOTALLY "OH MY FUCKING GOD THIS GUY IS THE SHIT" GOOD! I AM ON DIAL UP SO I DON'T GET TO LISTEN TO EVERYTHING SO IF ANYONE CAN POINT ME IN THE DIRECTION OF SOME CRAZY DRUMMING ON HERE PLEASE DO. BUT HONESTLY I AM A GUITAR PLAYER,NOT A DRUMMER FIRST BUT I CAN PLAY MOST OF WHAT IS ON THE SONGS ON THIS BOARD...AND I DON'T THINK THAT I AM REALLY GOOD OR ANYTHING. JUST NEEDED TO STRESS THESE THINGS. NO FLAMING, JUST STATEMENTS, AND PROPOSALS!

I'd challange YOU to write in lower caps... ;)

agree with schnoops on

Slipknots drummer. He plays pretty fast but he doesn't have anything that we haven't heard a million times before.
Back to the argument about people on this board having mediocre drums. If i remember correctly Rushfann33 has some great drumming skills. I had an mp3 a while back he posted of an instrumental track.

Bad drummer:
Abaddon (Venom)
Lars Ulrich (Metallica)

Very bad drummer:
Bernard Purdie
Gene Krupa
Tony Royster Jr. III

 (It should read Very bad ASS drummer :D )

Good drummer:
Gene Hoglan (Dark Angel, Testament, Death, Strapping Young Lad)
Paul Bostaph (Forbidden, Slayer)
Scott Travis (Judas Priest-Painkiller!)
the guy from The Meters (forgot his name)
Phill Rudd (AC/DC; simplicity at its best)

Mitch Mitchell from the EXP
Nah, he had his share of fame. I think Buddy Miles is way better and more underrated. Mitchell was always filling up things, very busy jazzy drummer. Miles was easy and steady.
I'm not saying Mitchell is a bad drummer, he rocks, I love the Hendrix EXP, but it's a bit of a show-off drummer.

Like Bozzio, he's the Steve Vai of drums... yes, very technical and very skillfull, but Phill Rudd will kick has ass any time! :p

Yall know nothing

You people obviously listen to too much pop music such as Blink 182 (the so called punk band) and stupid pearl jam ripoffs (creed). Stewart Copeland is one of the greatest drummers on this earth. His stuff beyond the police and oyster head arent a comparison to his on studies. So lets stop dissing the masters.

And all yall people dissing Bozzio have probably never heard Black Page arranged by Frank Zappa

Wow! Thanks Wireneck! That's very kind of you to say! You were probably referring to "Drastic Measures", the odd time frenzy song. That band was inspired by a mix of Rush and Racer X. Scott Travis is an exceptionally bad-ass drummer. He's probably one of the most underrated drummers in his genre of music!

This is my 500th post. I'm now a "freak of Nature"! er' I mean Force of Nature!
RF:D

i think lars ulrich sucks!!!

another drummer who is really good but in my oppinion is way too overrated is Travis Barker!

i dont think anyone should argue against Copeland being one of the great drummers
