After reading many a post for days on end on this subject, I'm finally going to add my 2 cents. Here goes: If you go to a show and all people say is "Wow, that drummer is awesome. Did you see how fast he was?" then he didn't do his job, and I wouldn't hire him if he were the last S O B alive. Having played as a semi-pro for many years now, I've learned one thing. Good drumming is drumming that is appropriate for, and compliments the song being played. If a song has some serious intricate & heavy stuff going on, then a kick-ass drummer is gonna need his bag-o-tricks.....and I HIGHLY appreciate those who can pull that off. But if I wanna see amazing chops, I'll go to a drum clinic. There's ALWAYS someone faster, flashier, "better"....just do your job pal 'cause I'm going home to listened to my Rush CD's. Cheers! lol

the drummer from snot is pretty fast, not that i know dick about drummers but i know metallia sucks for sure, 10x whoever the guitarst is anyway... ageesh...blaa...

some of there very earily stuff maybe... maybe, naw :) they suck...

Travis barker is a machine...hands down! Carter Beauford is a bad ass as well.

off topic but i second the terry bozio nod..
i recieved an insructional video he put out about 5 or 6 years ago...that guy was playing 4 diff time signatures with all 4 limbs at once......it was quite impressive...

ok back to the bullshit...:D

Lars. He is a one trick pony. Wish he would stop playing and shut up.
"...if a person is too cheap to pay $16 for our CD, then we don't want you as a fan" Maybe you should try putting out a CD worth buying! WTF was Load and Reload?? (besides crap and more-crap)
Asshole forgets that they got known by telling fans to freely copy and share their songs. Guess when you run out of good material, every penny counts.

As for highly underated drumers:
Eric Carr (Peter sucks)

joey jordison

flam rolls here, flam rolls there...

no feeling, just speed and double bass drrrrrrrrrr

raymond harrera will eat his heart out.

so will mike portnoy

Ringo was not the best drummer in the world ( and really didn't need to be ), but the Beatles would not have been the Beatles without him. There was a reason Pete Best did not cut it. It was a shame when Paul lost sight of that, because lets face it....Wings, like everything else he has ever done without the Beatles, sucked! Magic only happens with the right people come togeather.

Now would someone please give Gene and Ace a call and fill them in on this.

Most overrated:

Mike Portnoy (dream theater).

That guy never heard of a thing called "groove".
He does the same thing in every song over and over again and it is as simple as taking a good morning shit. Why do you think he has the time to throw drumsticks with his drumtechs on stage? If I were him I would spend more time studying on how to play.

Most underrated:

Don't laugh when I say this and don't say I only listen to what you call pop music...........the guy from Blink 182, damn have you ever listened to him play the drums? Damn he has the ability to fill up the music with a lot of accents without a non-drummer noticing it.
That's what I call a good drummer and he should earn a whole lot more credit.

The guy from erykah badu is also really good, he plays a click all the time and does it a whole concert without changing the sound (which happens when you move your stick 0,5 inch).

overrated drummer

the most overrated drummer is lars ulrich or neil pert i'm not sure

He Drummer man. ;)
Just in case you didn't know, "overrated" implies that the person is really not as good as he/she is said to be by the general population.

Drummer706 is a real good friend of mine that I turned on to this BBS guys.... ;) :D

Over-rated

Mike Portnoy, Lars Ulrich, and the funny painted guy in Slipknot.

Just an opinion: I believe Haake from Meshuggah is not over-rated at all. He is totally under-rated. And so is Morgan Agren who's one of the best drummers I've ever heard.

Mike Portnoy boasts that he does some bars in polyrithms...well, both Haake and Agren do it throughout an entire album. Check Fredrik Thordendal's Special Deffects and then we'll talk.

Most overrated drummer

1. Ringo Starr
2. Dave Grohl
3. That guy from Iron Butterfly
4. Lars Ulrich
5. Meg White
6. Scott Raynor (BLink 182's old drummer)
7. Tre Cool

Steve Smith.
This guy is an extraordinary TECHNICIAN. I don't know how
good a CLINICIAN he is, but as a MUSICIAN, he is very overrated.
His forte was with Journey(MUSICALLY).

sorry - but you don't play that many sesssions with that many GREAT musicians without being a great musician yourself

have you heard any steve smith drumming other than journey? 'cause if you did - you would realize that you're DEAD WRONG

It's funny, and doesn't surprise me, that when someone posts a thread that is asking for negative commentary (such as this one), how some fans will react.

Excuse me? If you think that ONLY the top of crop musicians get to play together, you're in a dream land. Just look at all those hired guns who get hired by mediocre talent. Is everyone going to say that every musician in the band is great because
they are all playing together??

Of course I HAVE heard steve smith with groups other than Journey, and that's exactly why I am not impressed with him as a
musician(other than with Journey).
I must say that steve smith DOES have the best posture while playing, I have ever seen.
But remember the question? Is he OVERRATED? ABSOLUTELY!!!!

this would be all fine and dandy if all of his sesssions were with the back street boys and vanilla ice or some other untalented lumps (or mediocre talent, as you put it)...but they were not. A good bit of his session work is/was with great musicians who demand the best from the musicians around them
