p.s. in terms of having vision of the power of music Hendrix and Page are almost equals, IMHO.
Bullshittttt!Hendrix was a visionary,while Page was a fucking thief!

In terms of musical depth of their playing, SRV is way behind the rest of this crowd. He's like an idiot savant.

disagree, SRV is as good as clapton. Don't get wrong slow hand is awsome too but i would rather listen to some double trouble than cream. I guess i just dig that texas blues sound. I find jimi paige (page whatever) to be sloppy sometimes in his live shit. Again Zepp rules but...

Agreed, Sambora does rule.

Way too broad of a post... i'm waiting for the flames to start...

In this pole Jimi Hendrix hands down. Those other guys are'nt even in the same league but Django Rienhardt kicks all thier asses in terms of skill, speed, technique, and inovation for his time. That mother fucker only had two fingers and could do runs that I only dream of. Wild crazy shit.

I agree with you on Django, but weren't his two fingers on his picking hand, not fingering?

No, it was his left (fingering) hand. He had all four fingers, but the ring and little finger had contractures (burned in a fire) that limited their use to some chording. Individual note runs were played by the index and middle fingers.

By the way, anybody who votes here for clapton based on his 70's output needs to go buy the first 3 or 4 JJ Cale albums and do some rethinking. Clapton spent the whole decade ripping off JJ's songs and style.

SRV is King, Who is the dumb ass who said SRV was a poser technician?

I had to join this discussion.

I have to agree with anyone how has previously said SRV is the best guitarist of those listed. To all who cite JH's great innovation, I agree. You have to understand that STEVIE also agreed!! He always gave props to those who came before him and that is what made him so real and his music, style and life credible.

Just before SRV tragically died in the day before my 12th birthday in 1990 he was heralded by his fellow bluesman as the best there is and ever was. That list includes BB King, Eric Clapton and others so it isnt just me and a few others saying it. He was the best.

Play on.

A friend of mine new Chet Atkins personnally. Chet was asked similar questions during his sejour and would answer that they were all good. One cannot treat playing as an athletic event. Its art. Every style has its place, mistakes can seem poetic, pauses are inspiring. What's ugly to one is beauty to another.

Well said. With so many divergent tastes and distinct preferences of players and fans alike it is impossible to crown only one "the best". Even by genre it is a notion to wrap a fair mind around. However, my vote still stands for SRV amongst the specific artists named.

d'ya know this is an impossible question?... there are no better guitarists... there are too many guitarists, too many styles, too many genres... you can't compare guitarists and the same thing applies to bassist and drummers... you can't compare John Bohnam to Buddy Rich and Billy Sheenan to Paul McCartney...
