guys I,am a guitarist 42 years....the best are the guys who had to play for a liveing in the bars.so then you know all the guys who came up hard ...jimmy page ain't played or pay no dues..where when you play in the bars you got to play dance type of music to grt the people hot so they got to drink to cool off ..bar owners like bands like that and will pay all over the world mahavisnu orchestra ..jimmy hendrix ..vanhallen..now you know why the beetles went to see hendrix in 1965 in england and called him a black demon prince the guitarist for ''yes''bad man the guitarist for a grouo call ''rough cut out of germany .steve vai out of calf...johnny wimter....the kid fron gun and roses he's nicethe real greatest ''glen camble and the guy from hehaw roy ??????these guys who play them long lines of head music ain't makeing no money ...guy who play in the bars and make the girls fall in love with them and their guitars thoes are the good ones..when you play from town to town you get really fucking hungy and if you can't get down you got to go home to mama..I,am skip been on the road so long all I play is the blues now and mees with girls who like my guitars

Assin, you mentioned some great guitar players. To Glenn Cambell and Roy Clark, I would add Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Albert Lee, Vince Gill, and the country singer with the black hat who's very popular now who's name I can't remember but is about the best guitar player I've ever heard (???). The country players have always been among the best and this is certainly true now. That said, I don't know WTF you're point was.

clint black?

well if were adding country....

what about willie and waylon?

Yea, how many John McClauglin imitators do you see?
None. I'd think he could play anybody's stuff, but I doubt there's anyone that can play his.

I'd like to see him chicken pick like Danny Gatton. Hell, I'd like to see anyone pick like Danny Gatton. I got to see him once, stood five feet away and didn't move for two and a half hours.

"The Humbler" RIP 10/4/94

Brad Paisley!!!

Thank you, Gidge. I was trying to think of his name in an almost identically inane thread going on somewhere around here. Brad Paisley is a GUITAR MONSTER! It's not fair that he can play guitar better than anyone, write and sing hit songs, and marry beautiful movie stars. I'd be happy for just one of those!!!!! Please, Gidge, don't you tell me you think he's cute :p

I think that paige is the best of the guys that you listed but I by no means think that he is the best ever. The only reason I voted for him is because he is much more versatile than the other guy, who I also admire but can not rank them higher than Paige.

I do think he's cute but he's not my type....too clean cut......i likebad boys......

but he does kick ass on guitar.....very underrated......

All guitar playing isn't the same and some people can't be compared to each other. Frank Zappa, Michael Bloomfield, Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry are all exempliary Rock guitar players but in that vein no one can touch Hendrix. The other guys in that poll aren't even worth mentioning.
But what about Doc Watson, Willie Mctell, Merle Travis, Blind Blake or Chet Atkins? All different and all unequaled. Personally my favorite may be the immortal Elizabeth Cotten. That's right a chick. They play the guitar too.

Jalbert, of course you are right. If you weren't why would any of us play at all? I read an interview with Carlos Santana right after his recent reemergence as a pop superstar a few years ago. Carlos was never afraid to stand on the same stage with major talent, which is of course the secret to his recent success. He talked about the time he and John McClaughlin performed together on a tour together in the 70's. He was very intimidated by the awesome ability of John McClaughlin and knew that he could never play like that. But he came to realize that he if he played true to his own vision the audience loved him just as much and he could indeed share the stage with the Mahavishnu. I was inspired by that interview and the humility of the great Carlos Santana, because it validated to me that I could go out and play and do my thing and people could enjoy it and I could have satisfaction and success as a musician on my own terms (Danny Gatton realized this, which is why he never left the Washington DC metro area).
Now, all that said, there is that quality we call genius...........Mozart, Beethoven, Ellington.........JIMI HENDRIX!!!!!!!!!!

CLARNCE WHITE
If he hadn't been run over at the age of 27 in 1973 he would be smokin all those dudes.

base freak

I,believe your the best caused you said soand there are some fine countrys basist name some..you heard ..delbert mc clinton his basist and willy nelson basist, and the old man ''charlie Daniels basist

I did the honest thing and voted for Hendrix. They're all great, but I give Jimi the nudge for originality.

I just recently saw the Mahavishnu Project; they're a Mahavishnu tribute band. Well worth checking out if you like their music. Anyways the guitarist does a great job of McLaughlin-type playing.

Also I would have to agree with the comment about Clarence White, he surely would've kicked ass.

I'd have to go with David Gilmore. The creativity is mind boggling

In this pole Jimi Hendrix hands down. Those other guys are'nt even in the same league but Django Rienhardt kicks all thier asses in terms of skill, speed, technique, and inovation for his time. That mother fucker only had two fingers and could do runs that I only dream of. Wild crazy shit.

For me they are all great and many many more who aren't on the poll.

If I "really" have to choose....it's Jimi. Such an innovator.
