who smokes *stuff* while mixing?

while i certainly don't frown upon the occasional smoke, i find that it rolls off my hearing in the high end, as it tends to inflame my sinuses. that's not exactly good for making critical mix decisions.

however, i DO find it to be helpful in the "being creative" or "science experiment" department. and it helps me "get into" the song better--so if/when i do, i tend to "save it" for after i've made a handful of mixes and i'm evaluating them--it almost always helps me choose which mix "moves me" the most.

and i try to avoid it when tracking, period.

cheers,
wade

Mmmmmm,... yeah!

Pass the creativity over here, man!

I'm one of those that can't help but mix while I smoke. Besides not being good for the equipment, it really does suck for your mixing. It never fails I'll get something sounding what I think is good. I'll show it off to everyone else, all of which are usually intoxicated on something and I'll usually get "yeah man sounds great". Everysingle morning after I walk down to the studio realize I didn't shut anything down and then I'll go ahead and hit the space bar. Utter chaos. I just sit there and think "what the hell was I thinking". So for mixing I don't recommend it. It does however help out with those bands that totally suck and can't make it thru a single song, really makes it tollerable.

Smoking is not allowed in my studio, I have more respect for my equipment, and my hard earned money than that.

I tracked my friends when they were on stuff. It sounded horrible, but I thought it was the funniest thing of the whole day.

Long story short: smoking and whatnot can help the creative process, but only use what you record as a scratch track, but more often than not, it will sound like shit. Track and mix with a clear head.

When I am mixing. When I am recording. When I am......

What was the question.

whooa..scary thoughts

using the well documented beatle stuff...
i think George Martin didn't..but the musicians did on occasion.
those were different times, before the invention of Nacho Cheese Doritos.

we've all heard smoking can lead to worse things,
I'm not trying to preach here but just help out.

so IMO the real concern here is " Nacho Cheese Doritos" that inevitably follows this smoking habit.

That orange sht gets everywhere...impossible to get off guitar strings.
..orange sht just everywhere ...all over your studio, your mixer, your doorknobs, your clothes...ugly, you say?

other technical concerns:
Dorito munching has a freq ~15Khz and is very hard to eq out of the mix.
So if your micing an important track and forget your munching, it will be near impossible to Eq out of the track. You'll probably notice the next day, heaven forbid you do a bounce!! then your really in trouble.

Also,
Dorito breath can sustain inside your LDC for very long periods, even months!
If it's a close mic'd singer you may even have orangy stains in your mic screen!!!forever!!

it's a scary thought.. picture a whole band walking around your studio with orange sht all over their fingers touching your stuff!

Psychology Stuff

My friend is a psychologist - - -

He says that if you learn how to play a song stoned you might replay it better stoned.

If you learn how to play an instrument stoned, you might play better stoned.

If you live your life stoned, you might be more clear headed when you're stoned.

Refering to Dre, Snoop, Clinton, ect... Exactly!

While were moving in this direction, I can guarantee every Sublime album was written, recorded and mixed through a haze of sinsemilla...
Music is art, art is about creativity, whatever it takes.

Some of you guys sound like hardline nazis.
