I can't mix worth a damn when i smoke out. I will smoke out only if i am just fucking around and have writers block..but I have really cut back on the weed, and it seems to have helped my overall drive.

about 3 years ago I was at a pro studio of a 35 year engineer that was mixing my buddy's modern 60s style original rock band. I watched him smoke more pot than I've probabbly done in my life while he was tracking and mixing the band. I have the final product and its not too damn bad!!! I say do what works.

So instead of an engineer with 35 years experience giving you something great you got something that is 'not too damn bad?' And that's a good thing?

;)

Oh no, not FACTS!!!!!!!!!!!

Several studies have concluded that THC makes you THINK you are performing a task better than not intoxicated, but third party judges view it as somewhat worse than normal performance. Not a lot worse, and I don't think it was ever quantified, but there will be exceptions to every rule.

a pc tech I know smokes every day and starts drinking about 2 or 3 pm. Never gets drunk. Can pass a field sobriety test (and has). If his behavior is any worse for it I can't tell, then again I don't suppose I have ever seen him strait. His is over 50.

I used to drink over a fifth of Jack a day. I'd start out as a pre-breakfast drink and go all day and night. Most of the time I was still awake and waiting for the store to open to go get another bottle. I could walk a straight line, talk coherently, even drive with no problems. My system just got so used to the Jack that it got to the point where it just didn't affect me anymore. I drank 18 beers in just a few hours last year just to see what would happen. My friend said I never changed a bit. I must have gotten to the point where I'm immune to it. Now I haven't drank like that for a few years now. Of course, my liver still remembers... ;)

My point was that if a guy with 35 years engineering experience got high and handed me a 'damn good' recording I'd hand it back to him, say, "Stay straight and let's try again... on YOUR time!" He should not have gotten a 'damn good' recording from an engineer with 35 years experience. He should have gotten a GREAT recording.

Sounds like he's on that ole african river, da Nile. What do you suppose he needed a field sobriety test for? This idiot drives too! It's pretty scary with dudes like this on the roads, more so with the ones that think alcohol doesn't effect them.

I think I agree with you guys. Some in the past have claimed that it made them better or hear things better. It doesn't seem right though.
After a bit of experience we beging to distinguish 'better' from just different.

gotta stay sober. on another level, its starting to kinda creep me out to see a bunch of slanty eyed people staring at me when i walk into the studio. i dont *smoke* too often but being the only one in the room not smoking is starting to feel weird...weird enough that i havent been in the studio for a week now.

maybe its time to visit the pro recording sound site and see how many famous records were/are being made while people are experiencing "enhanced" creativity... it's really quite shocking

Glade you chose to quit........I am 6'3" and about 250, my size 5 ex girlfriend
could drink me under the table any day, and did not appear drunk.

She is dead now, what a waste.
Keep on Keepin on!

I'm 6' 1" 220. My "ex" is who got me drinking 24/7. When we met I'd have a few drinks after work and when I played out but that was it. I had to quit or I'd be dead now too.

Sorry to hear about her.

I say,

Get wacked(stoned, high, bent - whatever you like to call it), open your current mix, play around as much as you like, then save under a different name. The next day when you are straight again open up your altered mix and check it out. I have had differing results. I guess it depends on the type of music. I write kinda trippy Pink Floyd type stuff, and a herbed mix is usually pretty good. But as for when mixing my buddies PoP/rock it usually sounds bad. Or maybe they all sound bad and I am always wacked.

Yeah, for the most part it's good to have a clear head. Not bad to take a listen while under the influence every now and then though - kind of like A/B ing the mix on a different pair of monitors.

most of my favorite songs were written by people with huge drug problems.
i'm not sure about the engineers and producers though. but i'm willing to bet a couple of them were cooked.

I agree with that. My personal creative flow has never been stronger. I quit smoking and drinking, started working out and taking care of myself. Now, I get ideas constantly and I CAN REMEBER THEM untill i am able to get them recorded. I can't tell you haw many albums worth af material i have forgotten because I was smoking or drinking.

And focus - oh hell yeah. I am SOOOO much more focussed now. It was almost like smoke and drink gave me attention deficit disorder.

I think it is best if you do not smoke or drink while recording, being recorded, or mixing. You need to focus, have clear thought processes, and efficient decision making ability. Pot and alcohol make those things impossible. :D

Just save the *stuff* as a reward when you've finished the project and are bumping it in your ride cruisin' down the freeway.
