Oh, oh....this sounds like a challenge...the gauntlet is down!
We could do it like they did in "The Quick and the Dead"! :D

.

so shoot the people who made the mixes that are least liked
seems like a rather extreme judgement :)
I like it....well except I'd probably be one of the first ones to get shot

That's OK. getting shot is great for picking up chicks. Almost as good as walking with a puppy. :D

I'm happy to take your word on that one without worrying about personally testing the theory :laughings:

See, I'd heard it as "I'll show you my wound if you show me your gash."

Then again, I hang out with drunken degenerates.:D

woah there, guys. Seems like things have spiralled a bit.
I wasn't really talking about a 'Lets all mix the same track and see who's The Don' scenario.

Here's some more info / background. Let's see if we can get this idea back on track (if you nice guys want to, that is)...

Basically, I was thinking the other day that, as home recordists, we write and record our own music for enjoyment, right? (Debatable, ha ha ha). Some of us aren't bothered about quality, others of us are. There are many variables here, we all know that, but it's generally agreed that good material recorded to a good standard is better than good material recorded to a low / poor standard.

So, assuming we all think we're writing good material (why would anyone sit down and write what they consider to be 'bad material'?), then the purpose of this post is to show the best of your recordings and share with fellow recording friends how your arrived there - interesting techniques, key bits of kit used, learned lessons, etc. etc.

Yes there are lots of different musical styles, but it's not just the quality of the song we're looking at - we're also (mainly) looking at the recording process & techniques.

To help move this along... I say we exclude music created solely on computers (e.g. electronic dance music) and focus only on music recorded traditionally, i.e. variations of drums, bass, guitars, piano's, vocals etc., all mic'ed up, tracked and mixed on whatever platform you use.

How's all that sound?

Still can't figure out why this isn't in the Clinic, but here you go, go nuts. This track is "Orianthi Pet Sounds Rumble". I didn't put that much effort into mixing it, and it shows! I dig the guitar parts though, that's exactly how I like to play :drunk:

Then why the title of this thread? You're looking for who make the best mixes and talking about having a contest. Now you're saying that's not really what you want? I'm confused.

A false assumption. Most folks participating here are doing this as more than just enjoyment, but instead for promotional purposes such as putting out demo discs, mySpace samples, or actual self-released CDs. And a large percentage are not creating their own music, but rather recording or mixing or mastering other performers. And before you say it, no that does not automatically make them professionals; in fact the majority would probably refer to themselves as amateurs. It takes a LOT more than just hanging a shingle out to be a professional.
then the purpose of this post is to show the best of your recordings and share with fellow recording friends how your arrived there - interesting techniques, key bits of kit used, learned lessons, etc. etc.

It sounds like you're describing the already existing MP3 Clinic forum.

As previously stated, this thread is simply an invite for guys like me (who write and record their own music for personal enjoyment) to share their best work with likeminded friends. If that description doesn't relate to you, then, well, see ya!

If it does... then let's hear your very bestest.

Mshilarious - Nice piece. What guitar rig were you using (axe / FX / amp)?

IMHO...while it's nice to toss up samples of your work, and even occasionally exchange comments with folks about each other's recordings....
...I find that most people just don't much care (mainly 'cuz THERE IS SO MUCH OF THAT "Hey check me out!" ON THE NET!!!) :D
I mean...everyone will say something out of politeness..."Hey, neat song! I like the guitar tone...etc"...but I rarely see deep discussions emerge about recordings that we've done in our studios.
It's like...everyone really just wants to showcase their work, which is OK, but rarely do people get into talking about all the finer details, "How I placed my mics, the settings on my amp, where I set the EQs, what type of compression….etc".
And a lot of that has to do with the fact that we all have different setups and recording environments…not to mention, different agendas with our recordings.

I've seen those types of threads get started a thousand times on forums...and they tend to die a quick death. Look a the MP3 clinic...there might be an occasional thread that gets some extended action...but most die off after less than 15 posts.

But I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that...’cuz let’s face it, most of us are mainly focused/interested on what WE are doing. ;)
Anyway...like others have said...the MP3 clinic is still the best place for what you want to do.

Two guitars (and a bass). The bass is an Epi Viola, tuned to "octave cello" (CGDA). I have since retuned to standard, because after a couple of years octave cello was hurting my head :( Although the nice thing about an unfamiliar tuning is I can just play notes without worrying about what they are. Very refreshing, music just becomes sounds again.

But I think that bass part was just low Eb - Db, very loosely inspired by Chris Squire's part on "City of Love".

I have two guits, the first solo was an Epi Airscreamer and the second was the infamous Fender So-Cal featuring Brian Wilson Presents Smile sticker. I forget which I used for the rhythm part, but I think it was probably the So-Cal.

All guitars/bass were through one my of DIs into an ART Digital MPA (which has its own DI of course, but it's more convenient for me to use my own, and I don't use the MPA anymore anyway). I don't have the session files laying around at the moment, but the bass was into a UAD 1176LN and that was probably it. The guitars would have been more involved, usually I use UAD Nigel followed by the UAD Space Echo just for the spring reverb and sometimes the echo and maybe even the UAD Plate 140. Maybe a Pultec too, can't remember. The former guitar part would have mainly been Nigel, but the second solo has the full reverbatory treatment  Percussion would have had Plate 140 and not much else I can remember.

This was a Rumble! track that I cut, so it would have been posted as just percussion/bass/rhythm guitar and then people added their own solos. Although I think this Rumble! only attracted two people :( The backing track, of course, was my very loose tribute to the title track from Pet Sounds :drunk: Obviously I thought Carol Kaye played way too many different notes (I get easily confused), so I replaced them all with Squire's more tasteful two :drunk:

Not to be rude or discouraging, but I'm in agreement with most of the others... why not just start a thread in the "MP3 Clinic" titled something like "Discuss your best mixes here" post your own best mix to start it off and say how/what you did, than just see where it goes, maybe it will take off, maybe not.

Well, what's being judged? The mix, the song, the performance? All three? A separate evaluation for each?

Can't really be separated unless two are controlled. Record me through the 610 and an 1176, and oh I dunno . . . let's say Flea through the Audiobuddy/3630. Send the resulting tracks to the greatest mixer in the world. He can do anything but undo those comps, because they were printed.

My money's on Flea . . .

can we have a sub category for 3am, drunk, on phones, and a laptop?

Ill take anyone on!!!!!

It's amazing that people will argue and debate over anything :laughings:

Are people not able to tell if a nice pop tune is recorded and mixed as well as a metal tune as well as a country tune as well as a trance tune?

Quite honesty, I like to listen to people like Madonna, Michael Jackson, ONLY because the recordings lots of the time, are top shelf. I wouldn't be caught dead buying their music though... well...evh's "beat it" was OK :) but I didn't buy that either!

Quite frankly, I'd love to compete against someone who thinks their expensive mic pre and channel strip is going to smoke what I might use, stricktly because they're just relying on name brand for "quality". I won't discount quality gear, but we all SHOULD know it's not just the gear.

So, I agree with the OP that post your tune, apparently preferred, recorded at home. No problem with Toontrack or BFD imo. Ya gotta mix and create tracks for them too. Same with a song full of Logic loops... bring 'em on. Logic doesn't come with SONGS... just sounds.

This thread is in the wrong forum!

Try this forum link below. Look for the Jan/Feb Challenge threads. This is already being done. To make it more challenging we swap each others lyrics to write music to and record. You'd probably like that.
