Lifeson underrated ??? PLEASE, I know so many guitarists who would give the man a BJ. He is practically worshipped. If you all think of one dollar as a vote for favorite guitarist in this world, think of this...he is a millionaire. Underrated, seriously you people are WAY out of touch.

:D :D :D

Yeah, I've noticed there are a lot of guitar gods in this thread, people who are known pretty much as great guitar players, and many from the current crop of millionaire schlock-rokkers. I think of underrated as that guitar part you know and love in that song you heard just one time but have no idea who the player is, and you find out about him when he turns forty or fifty after he has been playing since he was twelve. Maybe we should start a most overrated guitarist thread.

Most Over-rated Guitarists???

Hmm, Over-rated guitarists ya say??? Lemme take a stab at it..........

1) Yngwie Malmsteen
2) Richie Sambora
3) Jimmy Page (Ok, I just don't like him, all the more reason, eh!!!)
4) Keith Richards
5) Pete Townsend
6) Steve Vai
7) Joe Walsh
8) Ted Nugent
9) Noel Gallagher
10) In one year, will ANY of this matter????? :(

This is NOT to say these people have no talent or are not great musicians, I just feel that they are made out to be larger than life when they really shouldn't be.

With out doubt, there is a skill in what you dont play.

Yep. The less I play, the more people like it. :)

Most overrated: Eric Clapton.

In fact the only one I would mention. He was considered a Guitar God, but has never impressed me neither technically nor creatively. Yes, he is a decent guitar player, but far from as good as being credited for.

Keith Richards. Yes, indeed a very famous guitarist who plays like an amateur. But then again he hasn't been rated as very good (except for Rolling Stone Magazine's ridiculous grading of the 100 best guitarists a year or two ago). So I don't really consider him overrated.

Goose fart on a foggy day

I gave up my bb identity originality in homage of Leo Kottke. Most people who aren't music buffs have never heard of the guy. Pity. If you don't have a pop voice and pop inclinations it can be tricky to make a blip on the radar. But he just keeps plugging along since the 60's, making signature tunes and being respected by so many great musicians.

What mics does he use, anyway?

Leo's a good friend. His guitar sound is primarily from a Sunrise magnetic pickup. He also uses a SD mic (it doesn't really matter which, as long as it is good), but this is very much just an addition to the Sunrise.

I am going to see him for his Thanksgiving weekend concert at the Ordway, here in Minneapolis. Always fun. He is, without question, one of the two or three funniest people I have ever seen live. I couldn't begin to repeat any of his stories, so I won't try, but damn he is funny. He is just as funny offstage as on. And there are few greater joys in my life than when he sits in the shop and plays a guitar for an hour. No mics, no speakers, no electronic of any kind. That, my friend, is what music is all about. A great player, with a great instrument, and nothing else.

Oh yeah, and though not everyone knows him (though they do here in Minneapolis, his home), I don't think anyone who has heard him underrates Leo. He is, without question, one of the greatest fingerstyle steal string players in the world, and THE greatest twelve string player.

That being said, I don't really thing in the terms of "who's the best," or, "who's the most underrated." I think purely in terms of, whose style/sound/songs best fit my mood at the time. Music is about emotion and mood, not competition.

I would have to go with PHil Keggy, in 1969 a reporter asked Jimi Hendrix how does it feel to be the best guitar player in the world, jimi said, "DOnt know ask phil keggy."

Me. I am the most under rated guitarist out there.

I am also:
The most undesired
The most unrehearsed
The most undereducated
The most unfamous, too.

Come to think of it, I have everything going for me...............

How about Jeff Healey? Remember him? he was kind of a flash in the pan back in the late 80's, but listening to one of his CD's yesterday reminded me what an amazing guitarist he is.

I'd like to nominate Joey Santiago of the Pixies...very primitive and unique guitar style that works great with Frank Black screaming out his lyrics. That's all you need in my opinion, I could listen to his solo in vamos all day long.

Bill Conners. Only one album of him with Chick Corea. The Return to Forever album. Watched him play personally in a bar, every night for 6 weeks in the 80's. Unfuckingbelievable. Made John McLaughlin sound like a beginner.

my list of underrated guitarists:

syd barrett - go ahead and laugh, but Jimi Hendrix said he was blown away
by the very early Pink Floyd live stuff, and Syd was the reason - he could wrangle shards and textures of sound out of a guitar like a demon possessed

michael karoli - from the krautrock band CAN - check out the song 'Mother Sky' - brilliant, scathing lead work - AND he was an amazing rhythm player as well

peter green - best white blues guitar player I've ever heard - so tasty and deep - eat your heart out, eric clapton

john fahey - he was out there, especially later in his career, but when on form he could take you on an amazing sonic journey

honorable mention:

steve tibbetts: check out the album 'YR' - mindbending solos

bill nelson: his band Be Bop Deluxe featured his sick, imaginative chops

dick dale: another favorite of Hendrix's - when he cools out on the surf style, he is a soulful player with a monster tone

I'll second the nomination, although Keaggy disputes the fact that Hendrix said this. Keaggy is without a doubt a worldclass player whether it's on steel string acoustic, classical or electric. He's the ultimate genre hopper and is best appreciated live, with his band Glass Harp.

I'm fairly certain Bob Dylan hasn't been mentioned yet, which is surprising.

And since the board's resident bitter old folks will soon chime in with their cries of "UNDERRATED???!!!! Are you kidding me? Maybe if you're only 16!" I will just clarify that we're talking about his ability as a guitarist, not strictly as a songwriter.

Hmm. I'm 26 and I do like Bob Dylan. I'm not sure what your point is. I'm just saying he's primarily known for his songwriting and not his guitar playing, which I believe is better than a lot of people give him credit for.

i know a guitar player that nobody rates

well i hear you guys talk about guitar players and all that well i bet none of you have heard of this dude he is just out there he can kick your butt at guitar and just play and play gets more notes in than most shredders do and his website has free video clips to watch him play check out his website is here

haha be ready to get your minds blown :D
