Who is the most underrated guitarist?

back in the old days Vinnie Martel was pretty underated, so underated in fact most people do not even know his name.

TIM REYNOLDS!!!!!! Anyone remember the Dave Matthews episode of VH1 Stroytellers, well, I do and OMG, that guy Tim just rips!!!!! I think he's extremely under-rated, and extremely talented!!!!! :cool:

Pete Anderson (Dwight Yoakam)

Gurf Morlix (x-Lucinda Williams)

Mitch Easter (Let's Active, Velvet Crush) - a great producer, but also a great guitar player. Check out his playing on Velvet Crush's "Teenage Symphonies..." album - explosive.

Richard Lloyd (Television, Matthew Sweet)

David Rawlings (Gillian Welch's partner) - saw him this summer on the
Emmylou Harris tour....this guy's playing blew me away.

Dean Wareham and Sean Eden (Luna) - I like to think of them as the "Duane and Dickey" of post-punk/alternative rock.

Jay Bennett (x-Wilco)

Eric Ambel (Steve Earle)

David Hidalgo & Cesar Rosas (Los Lobos) - those guys can play.

Mike Campbell (Tom Petty) - definitely not flashy, but the guy knows how to "play for the song". Has he ever played a wrong note?

Angus Young (AC/DC) - 'nough said.

I only didn't mention Lerxt because I thought he was a given as one of the greatest of all time. But anyway, here's my vote for Alex. Best rhythm player of all time, and kudos for not shredding all the time and creating melodic solos.

This guy definately deserves more praise (and more money from Matthews :D )

i agree with some peoples adversion to just naming the "fastest" player around. although speed/dexterity is highly valued i don't see how it can be more important than melody. kids everywhere can lock themselves in a room and train their fingers to move fast but it takes something different to visualize melody. i can be impressed with speed in the same way that i can be impressed by a good looking female, but if she doesn't have class and personality then i don't want to talk to her. in the same way if all that dexterity is displayed in a non-emotive/sterile piece i just can't enjoy it very much.

I agree about Martin Barre, even though I listened to Jethro Tull for year I hardly knew his name. Ian Anderson was so much synonymous with Jethro Tull that he overshadowed everything.

In folk music fingerpicking style I would mention Dave Evans. Yes, there are others with the same name in the music business, I know. This guy, however, is in my opinion the very best fingerpicker. Better than Bert Jansch and John Renbourn. Hearing him completely changed my own style of playing for years.

Seeing this thread I did a search to see if there was anything on the net, and I found several things, like this: http://www.cdroots.com/wb-evans.html

Unfortunately, the two short audio demos don't showcase his guitar playing at all. There are no solos not to mention pure instrumentals. I still have tapes I recorded myself in 1973 sitting a few feet in front of him. If you are into fingerstyle guitar picking, get his cd's for inspiration.
 
Lifeson underrated ??? PLEASE, I know so many guitarists who would give the man a BJ. He is practically worshipped. If you all think of one dollar as a vote for favorite guitarist in this world, think of this...he is a millionaire. Underrated, seriously you people are WAY out of touch.
 
restraint

'In my opinion restraint is the best chop you can have'.

With out doubt, there is a skill in what you dont play. Look at Jack white - I know I'm going off topic (cause he's not necesarely under rated) but yes 'restraint' is an essential part of top quality guitaring. I get board easily when some one decides to incorporate every note in every octave and every scale they know into some tune when it only needs a carefully few crafted notes - obviously its fun to go for it - say if your playing live - but yes 'restraint' is the way forward.

As far as under rated guitarists go - ME!!!!!!! and of course Jef Beck - While he is obvioulsy recognised as one of the best - he is not known as well on a main stream level - he is with out doubt up there with clapton, page and all your usual suspects (just a pity he had to partner up with that pleb Rod Stewart I suppose)
