Instead of a million more threads on who is the "best" guitarist I've decided to see who you people think is the most underrated guitarist. I won't post a poll as I would have no idea where to begin to compile a list from, but shout your opinions, start some good arguments, have fun.

Tim Mahoney --> 311
George Harrison
Billie Joe Armstrong ---> Green Day

IMO,
Al DiMeola is by far the most uncelebrated guitarist out there.

me....although i don't play guitar. but any local jazz guitarist. those guys play like no other but are generally not ever heard outside their town.

Dave Navarro

I don't think he is the most technically interesting guitarist. But his style is very cool and I think had a lot of influence on guitarists in the 90s. More than most people realize or will admit.

Some of the stuff he did with the Chili Peppers was very cool... I'm thinking of the song 'Walkabout.'

Not to mention Jane's Addiction was ahead of their time. If they had broke out into the national spotlight maybe 5 years later than they did (when the alternative scene exploded), they might have been the biggest alternative rock band in history.

Robbie Kreiger (sp.?) - doors. All anyone ever hears is that incessant wailing organ, and they tend to overlook the guitar work. Plus dude plays with his fingers, not a pick, which somehow makes it seem cooler, given the "rock" style.

I have to completely agree with John Mayer and Prince.

In a more general sense, I have to say that I respect a guitarist that can play your face off but instead chooses to play within the context of a song far more than a guitarist that can play your face off and does so in every single freaking song.

Guitarists like that are very rarely known for their huge chops because usually they don't display them. Too bad.

In my opinion restraint is the best chop you can have.

A

Dominic Miller- for work on Sting albums since the early 90's

Ed O'Brien- the other Radiohead guitarist. His playing really shines on Neil Finn's '7 Worlds Collide' live album.

John Mayer- he's not just another teen idol.

Some good ones listed so far.

Ty Tabor from King's X
Ian Moore
Buckethead because...well...he's friggin' weird. But amazing.

Martin Barre

When I read the title of this thread that is the first name that came to mind. I can think of a lot of more obscure/unknown slingers out there who deserve notice, but when it comes to somebody who everybody and their brother has heard and does not know their name ------ he is it.

Right on!!!

His band gets a lot flack from people that have only heard the radio hits. They sure had a good run of great lp's in the 70's. Lp's like Stand Up and Benefit are so full of great tunes that no one has heard. Awesome guitar tone and solo's.
