it just depends... I never stick to one channel and I only use mine for recording so I'm always looking for different tones from the last time.

also, it seems I end up using it more for leads than rhythm... not sure why

probably not helping, but here's me riffing with DR Solo over a backing track from somewhere.

DR Solo

yeah, it's a three channel solo.

I listened to your clip and it seems a bit grainy and harsh.

if I get a chance in the next day or two I'll track a rhythm with mine.

Why are you using the overdrive? Mesas have more gain than anyone in their right mind would want. Here is a dual rec with a guitar plugged right into it from a rehearsal a couple weeks back. It's mic'd with the 57.

it's not for additional gain. it's for cleaning up the bottom and additional tone control.

on the surface it may seem odd, but it can make a very significant positive difference with high gain amps.

hey farview, what amp seting did you use on that clip? and what tubes?

Red channel, bold, silicone diode, vintage mode. It still has the 6L6's.

If you want to clean up the low end, turn down the bass control. Mesa's, unlike marshalls, have very responsive tone controls. You can change the tone and the way the amp distorts just by twisting the tone controls. It's very versatile, you can get dozens of different sounds out of it.

what do you mean red channel? but yeah i set it to your setings and it sounds pretty close to yours! i need to record it but im too lazy to do it right now lol

Sorry but I'm not sure of your point...
My point was, I've never had to put anything in front of a mesa to get it to do almost anything I wanted.

it's not about having to... it's about options... consider trying it sometime when you have time.

I've got too many amps. If the mesa isn't doing it, one of the marshalls will, or the Soldano, or the Bogner. If all else fails, the Pod. I remember using the overdrive pedals with the JCM 800's 25 years ago. I always hated how they tended to cut the balls off the sound, so I modded the amps for more gain. Distortion pedals just are not my cup of tea.

You've totally missed the point... so I guess they're just not your cup of tea...

Maybe you should sell some of your amps...

I would not use any other tubes than mesa. I know they are more $$ but they sound the best for the amp. That's why they are fixed bias. You can order the tubes straight from boogie.

Boogie would like you to think that they are the only supplier of suitable tubes for their amps. If you tell the guy at eurotubes.com that you are running a Boogie, he will send you tubes that will work with the fixed bias.

I believe this is a matter of taste. And for some a cost issue. I like the tone of the boogie tubes. I've tried jj, gt, sovtek. None compare to the boogie tubes.

I haven't experinced the euro, i may be wrong. I may be missing out.
