Yes although I don't believe the DR-5 gives you much flexibility in the drum department. It's mostly loaded with all kinds of synths, basses and guitars and stuff.

but do you think this product will be a good machine for making hip/hop and R&B beats?

You can most definitely use the DR-5 to make hip-hop beats. This was the unit I learned on and found it to be educational and pretty capable.

It only has a 4 track sequencer and 256 instruments sounds (of which maybe 30 are usable besides drums and percussion). The unit only has 4 levels of velocity so the dynamics are very limited but are still usable. You can store 200 user patterns and chain these patterns to create 20 user songs. You can create 20 user kits which consist of a drum kit, a bass sound, a lead sound and a rhythm sound.

I hope this helps and if you want to hear the unit check out the site listed below. All the tracks were made using only the DR-5's internal sounds and sequencer.

I'm winning a TR-707 right now on E-bay. I wanted the R-8 MKII, but it's out of my price range at this time.

I started in '86 with a TR-505. Cool machine in it's day but not as nice sounding as a Linn or Oberheim.

The Oberheim DMX was tops in it's day, but not nearly as flexible as todays machines.
