You can most definitely use the DR-5 to make hip-hop beats. This was the unit I learned on and found it to be educational and pretty capable.
It only has a 4 track sequencer and 256 instruments sounds (of which maybe 30 are usable besides drums and percussion). The unit only has 4 levels of velocity so the dynamics are very limited but are still usable. You can store 200 user patterns and chain these patterns to create 20 user songs. You can create 20 user kits which consist of a drum kit, a bass sound, a lead sound and a rhythm sound.
