Who can help me starting out with Drumkit from Hell?

Hi,

I managed to get one of the favored Drumkit from Hell sample pack versions available.

After scrolling through the folders, I’m a bit confused. There are many different samples in there. I understand that this supposedly offers a lot in versatility since “hand-made” hits are supposed to sound different for almost every hit.

1. First of all, I don’t know which version I have got. There are 16 folders and the total amount of samples is 558. Isn’t DFH supposed to have like over 1000 samples?

2. The pack I have, doesn’t seem to include a programme or sequencer.
I have Fruity Loops 4.0 myself, which I used previously. Should I keep using this for DFH, or should I search for something else? The approach of FL is “one sample per track”. Does this really mean that I am supposed to use 5 tracks for the bassdrum, 5 tracks for the snare, and so on? I just can’t believe this is the way.. I would end up with 60 drum tracks, with interactions between tracks all over the place! How to mix something like that?

3. Which samples should I use to build a rock or metal sound?

4. Also, I read somewhere that the names of the files are supposed to point out which sample is what, using characters like C, R and L. In my pack I only see H, R and L.. How should I interpret this?

Any help is appreciated!

i might can help with some of these

2. Drumkit for hell is a sample package to be used with some sort of a sequencer, so no it doesn't include one that i know of. Fruity loops should work depending on your needs. (I find it very limiting when it comes to using mixed meter and switching between time signatures) but these problems supposebly are cleared up in the newer versions. To vary the drum hits in fruity loops, use the velocity function. Switching between samples would prob be more realistic but im not sure how you would go about it in the fruity loops setup.

3. Listen to them man, you should be able to tell what samples are going to work for your style. The original package was geared torwards rock/metal anyways so any of the samples should work.

4. since i havent actually used drumkit from hell i have no clue how they are categorized.

As mentioned, these are samples to be used primarily with a sequencer such as the EXS24 in Logic Audio, Halion and others for the multiversion. You will see these folders on the CD.
1 is a rock kit the other is jazz.
I dont use fruity loops and there is no mapped format for it on DFH. You will need to import individual hits into fruity which will be time consuming and probably hectic.
Best suited and mapped for Halion, EXS24, Battery, DR-008, LM4, and Gigasampler.

I'm also looking at DFH to upgrade from my BlueJay soundfonts.

I guess, from what I understand, DFH is not only a $100 sample library, but one would also need a $175 VST sampler (capable of multidsamples) to use the samples with? Would VSampler work?

Can you use a DR-008 kit with the DR-005 or DR-002 samplers?

I imagine you can assign the sampler's output to individual tracks? Can you then bounce these down, or do you have to record them as audio. (I guess these are more sampler type questions, but hopefully someone can help)

Isn't there a DFH version 2 coming out soon? Would it be worthwhile to wait...

If you do not have the above sampler instruments you can still build a kit with another sampler by importing individual samples off the CD which will take a little time and patience. I generally build a track via midi and triggers from my drumkit and then break them down to individual tracks for complete control over the entire kit.
Version 2 contains more percussion instruments such as bongos, congas, cowbells, etc...

Drumkit from Hell/Fruity Loops Issue

Drumkit from Hell WAV samples work well with Fruity Loops. There is a "bug" or sorts though. After a short time, FL will not be able to "find" the Drumkit from Hell WAV files on your system. (The "missing" sample/file name buttons will turn red.) To remedy the issue, you must "recall" each sample used in your sequence from their respective system folders back into the FL sampler. I have only had to do this once, but I have been told that it is a recoccuring issue. The results are worth dealing with the aforementioned issue. I have had great results by mixing down (I.e.-Exporting) FL suquences composed in conjunction with Drumkit from Hell to WAV/mp3 files. The WAV/mp3 files can then be dumped into a hard disc recording system. I plan on getting a Roland 24-track workstation and synching it with FL running the Drumkit from Hell samples. I would get a computer set up, but they are WAY TOO expensive...even the Pro Tools LE systems will set you back $5,000.00 (*This price includes the Mac G5 that is necessary to run the software effectively.)

As far as the number of samples go, I use approximately 25 samples for my "speed/power/thrash metal" kit using the Drumkit from Hell samples." Here is a breakdown of my FL set up-

2 kicks (left and right)
4 high hats for variation
4 snares for variation
2 rides
2 ride bells
1 left crash
1 right crash
1 "dark" crash
1 china
1 crash choke left
1 crash choke right
1 splash left
1 splash right
I use 5 toms with left and right samples for each (10 total)

It is time consuming to compose realistic sounding drum tracks with FL. The results, however,it well worth the wait! I can sequence out an entire song in 4 hours or so with PERFECT results. The Sonor kick, snare and tom samples for a metal sound.

Here are a few suggestions for using FL and Drumkit from Hell.
1.) Pick your 25-35 drum sounds and stick them in a folder called "Full Drumkit" incase you have to recall the samples.
2.) Make sure to use a variety of high-hats and snares. For example- I use 4 snares and I make sure not to stick with one sample for more than a few hits. This prevents the sequence from sounding overly mechanical and fake. *The Drumkit from Hell Superior AUTOMATICALLY varies the hits! DFH Superior, however, requires a MASSIVE computer to run the program effectively.
3.) Compose all fills on the piano roll.
4.) Buy a pair of drum sticks and a basic drum rudiment book. This will help you think more like a drummer and compose better grooves, fills, etc. (*I used to compose parts that were not humanly possible before I learned what drummers can and can't actually do!)
5.) Develop and ear that enjoys the sound of "real sounding" drums- especially for metal! Too many heavy-metal albums have ridiculously fake sounding drums (More than a few albums have sequenced drums...I know of at least 3 big metal bands that have recorded ENTIRE albums with sequenced drums!)
