I make my on mic and 1/4" to 1/4" cables, but making an insert cable has severely bafled me. It costs $40 for ONE monster insert cable, thats the 500 variety, if i could find 100 maybe it woul be cheaper. But does anyone else do that, not HOSA's hard multicolour "cant fix it if it breaks" connectors either.

If you make your own mic and 1/4 inch cables then an insert should be no problem either.

You need two mono 1/4" jacks (TS), one stereo 1/4" jack (TRS) and two pieces of wire that are the same length.
Solder a mono (TS) 1/4" jack to each piece of wire exactly as you would for a regular 1/4 to 1/4, core to tip and shield to sleeve.
You now have two identical pieces of wire.
Next, connect the shields of both pieces together and solder them to the sleeve of the stereo 1/4" jack (TRS), then solder the core of one piece to the 'ring' of the stereo jack and the core of the other piece to the 'tip' of the stereo jack.

That's it.

If you are using shrink tubing for strain relief it is a good idea to use two different colors on the mono ends so that you can easily tell the send from the return.

Good luck.

yea, whats this shrink stuff?

i always hear about it with insert cables, with xly and 1/4" the connectors do the strain relief. also, your plan sounds like you are trying to shove two wire thickness through one stereo connector.?

Shrink tubing -
A lot of 1/4" cables come with a sort of rubber tubing that either wraps the whole jack and the first 2 inches of wire or sticks out from inside the jack and covers the first couple inches of wire in place of a spring, it is usually blue, black or white in color and it looks just like ordinary wire insulation. To apply it you just cut the length you want, slide it into place and shrink it with a heat gun (if you are very careful you can even do it with a cigarette lighter), it insulates electrical connections like tape and also provides some strain relief.

If you wire the cables the way I described you will need to use a smaller wire gauge so that both pieces can fit into the stereo jack, if not you have to make a sort of join in the middle of the cable to create a 'Y'. I prefer the first method, although with shrink tubing the second can work.

Good luck.

insert cables

Try Rapco for about $30 US (mine cost me about about $40 Canadian).

I've been going to 'Horizon' HYS-P-3'. Think their around $18, have good solid steel 1/4" connectors with strain relief, and decent shielded cable. The hosa's I have are molded plastic with very thin conductor--wiggle the wire at the connector and very often you'll hear crackling noises. ech!
