I have been miking my guitar amp with a sm57 and a sm58. Run it into a a motu ultra lite and then into Ableton. I can get a great sound, but I find I have to turn up the volume levels in Ableton to get it loud enough, and then I get white noise. How can I prevent this? Is there something simple I am not doing? Is this some sort of background noise?

I have Cuemix FX also, its rather confusing to me, but if someone is familiar with it and this problem can be fixed there I would be much abliged.

Again... I love the sound, just cant get the white noise out.

All help is appreciated, Thanks!

What levels are you tracking at? What do your meters say? Define "loud enough".

Barring a fault with either your mics or the MOTU box, this sounds like a gain staging problem. If levels into your MOTU interface are cranked down too low then you try to compensate by cranking them up again in Ableton, you'll get exactly the white noise effect you're talking about.

The first thing to do is make sure the switchable pads on the MOTU aren't engaged and, if not, crank up the "trim" knobs a bit, even if it means turning down the software mixer later in the chain to avoid clipping.
