Hi...I'm a drummer interested in purchasing an 8 track selfcontained studio...like a TASCAM 488 or 688 or "something"88. I've never purchased a studio before and I'm confused as to which one I should look for. I would really prefer being able to record all 8 tracks at once (I believe that leaves out the 488) Should I be concerned about that? Will I be passing up a better model because it only records four tracks at once? Should I go digital instead?. Maybe another brand will be better for my application? I will be recording drum tracks and will require more than four tracks because my drums are internally miked. So there goes the "two mics in the center of the room" thing. I have an AKGD112 in the bass, a SM57 in the snare, and Senn64s in my five toms, if that helps with the recommendation. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated...thanks

I own the 688, and for $350 shipped it never fails to amaze me in what I can do with it.
Good luck finding another one for that price, though! :D

Tascam 238 is also great and records 8 tracks at once. portable. you will need an external mixer. A guys got a brand new TASCAM 388 1/4 inch 8 track mixer/recorder on ebay RIGHT now that you might want to consider.Thats rare in that cond.

bt,

you should definitely at least consider buying digital. the difference in sound is like day and night. plus you get editing advantages that you could never get on a tape machine. or the simple thing that you don't have to wait for the tape to rewind... so far i haven't been able to come up with one single thing that isn't better on my digital mtr compared to my old tascam tape 4 tracker. it's a little more money, but it's worth every cent.

good luck shopping,

mm
