I sit on you.
Well, this isn't JUST for me. I know of plenty of n00bz that register here just ot ask questions like this! But I'm really trying to find more and/or better ways for Stereo drum overheads and stereo acoustic guitar miking.

At this point, I've been pretty dead-set on buying another MXL 991 to match my other. Can't hurt to ask some outsiders!

So what would I be better off doing; from the money-to-performance ratio?

Buy another MXL 991 (or 603) and do the cap mod to both
OR
Buy a pair of JoeMeek JM27 SDCs
OR
Buy a pair of Oktava MK012's

(not too interested in the 012's, but if it's worth the extra mulah, I'd wait for them.

My current situation for drum miking is:
SM57-Snare
Beta52-Kick
no-name dynamics on toms
MXL 990-OH

I definatley want to use stereo SDC's for OHs, now that I've got my toms miked up!

I agree with you picking up a pair for overheads, because I like having stereo overheads. Of that list I've used the 603's, the JM27's and the MK012. I sold my 603's, the 27's and I still have the 012's. I just liked them the best for the sound I'm trying to get. So if it were my setup I'd get the Oktavas.

As for the 991 - I have on experience with that mic, but if they're like the 603's than you know my answer.

I have all the mics you mentioned. I agree with that the MK012's are the sweetest as drum overheads but---the 991's are brighter and also nice. I have a very hard time telling them apart from my 603s. I also like the JM27's (kind of a cross between the 603 and the MK012). Every mic you mentioned makes a good, inexpensive drum overhead.

Th 991 and the 603s are the same exact mic. I like my 603s a lot, they sound great as over heads. I'd say go for it since you already have one

I really like my Oktava 012s on the overheads. Pretty good sound for a fairly inexpensive mic.

I'd buy a pair of Studio Projects C4's. They sound great, you get omni and cardiod capsules...and did I mention they sound great?

Yup! I think that you have to spend over $800 to match or beat the C4 mics. Clear as a bell. Definitely worth saving up for.

For now, my 991's will do. Once summer comes around, I'll pick up either the Oktavas or the C4s...which do ya'll think is better?

(Of course, I mean a Russian pair of Oktavas with all the fixins!) ;)

studio projects C4 pair. Love those SDCs.

I use the Oktavas, as well as Studio Projects C-4''s, and Neumann KM184's. I like the Oktavas as rock and blues overheads, and the C-4's on country and jazz. I much prefer the C-4's on acoustic, and also as a live or live studio acoustic guitar mic. I also prefer the C-4's for stereo or orchestral recording. The color that makes the Oktavas so good on rock drums tends to make them muddy on a string quartet.
The Neumanns blow them both away, but they are supposed to, for $1500 the pair. Even with the Neumanns around, I keep the C-4's for SD omnis, and the Oktavas for gigs in bars, etc., where I just can't risk the Neumanns. And I still often use the Oktavas for overheads. They are just good on rock drums.-Richie

I like the mk012's on drums but not cymbals, so I don't use them for overheads. I put them up once and frankly thought they sounded awful, cloudy and generally lo-fi. Some people like that sound and more power to them. Maybe they are better with the mods. But, mine are now tom mics and work pretty well for that. I don't have any experience with the 603s, but from what I just heard on a mic test posted elsewhere on this board they seem to have some promise.
