If you were buying Sonar 3 today, would you go for the Studio Edition or the Producer Edition?

I went for the "Deluxe" Edition when I first bought PA9. It wasn't worth it.

Since then, with Sonar 1 and 2, I have stayed away from the XL editions, and went with the standard editions. No regrets with that approach.

Should I do the same with Sonar 3 and just go with Studio?

Waves beat Ultrafunk
Kompakt beats V-sampler.
Only thing going for the PE in your favor is the price.You get a lot for the money,you'll have more but not better.
Dedicate the difference towards your new CPU so you can actually use these tools and with low latency to boot.

I've stayed away from 3.0 as my current system does not really have the horsepower to run it.

Lately I've been teetering on taking the plunge for a new computer system. Then I got an e-mail from Cakewalk offering the Studio Edition again for $79. So I was thinking of possibly getting it for use when (if?) I upgrade the CPU.

I know all you boys were raving about the "extries" in Producer Edition when it first came out. However, I remember hearing raves about FX3 Sound Stage (?) that was offered with PA9 Deluxe when it first came out. I took the plunge for that one, and don't think I ever actually used it on any finished project.

So, it got me to wondering how great the Pantheon Reverb, V-Sampler, and Sonitus stuff seemed today - now that the "new toy" syndrome has maybe worn off a bit.

From the response, it seems that having the Waves Gold bundle, and Kompakt, that there ain't much for me in the Producer Edition worth paying the extra $ for.

There was never any doubt in my mind about the need for Sonar 3.0 - solely based on the Bus routing options. That's what I'm lusting after!!!

I understand Cap'n. I don`t need that kind of versatility for now. Heck I still got questions about PA9 and I'm in 2.2 now

I`m a luster though.... 3 has pretty knobs and switches too.
I do like the vertical metering in trak, user configurable module racking, and the audio editing screens. Looks similar to Nuendo in ways.

I struggled with the same decision. I Never went with any deluxe version of Cake until 3.0. The per channel EQ sold me. I don't regret the extra $$ for it. If per channel EQ doesn't interest you, the VSampler and Pantheon certainly aren't worth the extra price of admission. The Sonitus fx package is pretty decent though. Sonitus fx reverb is better than Pantheon (IMO)

All in all, the "new car smell" is still around, but it would probably smell just as good if I had the Studio Version.

There's something about that "Producer" title on there that's gotta be worth something ... don't you think?

I take that back ... I fell for a $99 offer to upgrade from PA9 to ProSuite. Two months later, SONAR was introduced

Ended up getting SONAR 1.0 for free ... which is about what it was worth

AR - did you go for the SE or the PE/ If I recall, you were pondering these same questions. What did you end up doing?

I went for SE.It has a "light" version of Pantheon.
My problem with the effects is the incremental steps in the upgrades.
It's always a "little better" than the last bundle.If I'm going to spend the money I rather get a whole lot better or hold out.

Why only get a little better when you can get alot better?

If you are just jumping into recording,the PE edition is an outstanding value.My comments are based on Dachays situation.

Is the Cakewalk reverb that was so good when it came out in Sonar 1 all of a sudden no good when the next edition comes out?
When Sonar 4 comes out,which plugs will then be labled as inferior?Unusable?

I like the Pantheon reverb.I use it,but it's not a quantum leap over the FX reverb.

Sonar 1 was alot better than PA9....

moskus is right. Sonar was a quantam leap, but I was still running Win98 because my audio interface at the time was a Gadget Labs 824. The combination didn't get along well.

It seems I spend 50% of my hobby time recording and the other half keeping up with new hardware and software evolution.
