Which pre amp would you guys buy if you had to pick one? UA Solo 610 or the UA 710? If any wants to give me some opinions that would rock!!!!!!

I wouldn't buy either. Nicer pres to be had for the money.

Unfortunately your good companies will put out a real turd at a low price point to get those home recorders...like that Neumann tlm103:rolleyes:

Is there something better for the price? A Millenia Media TD-1 is about three times the price. A True P-Solo is about the same. A little less. Grace M101 about the same. I don't know. I suppose if you want transparency get a Grace. I think the UA pres are not the most transparent mic preamps out there. But, I think that is also why they are so popular among the home hobbyists. I'd take the 610. Just not so sure about that hybrid tech. For sure it will colour your sound. But I think it would be nice to have the choice.

I suppose, if I had the cash I would go with an Avalon M5 and a UA Solo 110.

At this point I can afford to go out and pay cash and get just about anything out there...but I know what I need...I need preamps that will enable me to utilize every input I have so I can record a whole band at once...and you are not going to get that by blowing your whole budget on one channel.

Everyone has an opinion, but that doesn't take a Grey area like "better" and make it black and white.

For my own perspective (and ironic given the other thread responses), I just recorded using a TLM103 and a UA 710. The UA was borrowed from a local dealer because I have wanted to test it out. The 103 was the cardioid middle of an MS recording for 9 piece male vocal choir. We recorded in a fairly live room and the mics were about 10 feet away.

I loved the sound which was clean and present with a touch of harmonic saturation from the tube side, I might get a pair of the UA 710's (when money allows).

I would see if a local dealer will let you borrow one of these and take them for a run. No one elses opinion will matter when you test things yourself, if its possible.

The 610 is a great all around pre amp. Although the originals were legendary, the company caries on with their quality (and pricing if were being honest).

No offense intended here darrin but, this is about LoveOsyter isn't it. I"m just not sure how your needs apply to his. Is there a preamp you had in mind? That would be helpful otherwise, how does that apply?

I think TomT hit an important point though. You're going to have to listen to them to form a decent opinion. A/B them really.

This is where you are losing me???
So take drums for instance...do you lay down a snare track...then go back in and lay down a track for each individual piece...or do you record all those drums in one take?

One preamp is fine if its you and a solo guitar...but not every client coming into pay you to record them will be a coffie house folk singer...and your band clients will expect better than that.

The UA stuff is expensive enough for me to assume he is wanting to do more that just spin his wheels in his basement...if he is serious he should be thinking about enough mic inputs to cover a whole rythem section.

Nope, still not getting it.

Darrin, this guy probably already has preamps for all his inputs. He's allowed to add nicer ones if he wants :p

while i definitely agree that there are better pres to be had for the same money (especially if you find one in good shape on the used market), if you're basically using some inexpensive chinese mics with the hyped top end, running your guitars through modelers, and di'ing bass and keys, the 610 would round out those kinds of sources well. it's not a bad pre by any means-- i think the 610's are actually pretty good, especially if you upgrade the 12ax7 and 6072a tubes in there. i definitely think that they are pretty overpriced though.

i totally get you. Thanks for all your guys help. i got one and it sounds pretty good though, i am using a sm7 and a re 20 with it. seems a little bassy, but thats not a bad thing. It Def sounds better then the ART pre that was being used before.

I also get taht there are better pre's out there and maybe for less money. but i go with names i trust. I tried teh 610 and that sounded good, it looked to me that the 710 is a 610 with added freatures.

thanks for all the responce, I dig having people to bonce stuff off of.

I just got my hands on a 710 and I A-B it with a Focusrite VoiceMaster Pro.
I've had the focusrite vmp for a while and I liked it a lot it really sounds clean and open, but when I AB it with the 710 I was very surprised.

the 710 does sound a lot better, very round and "warm" with a little sparkle.
I tracked some female vocals and i am very happy with the results.

Its a good upgrade preamp in a good price range.

the only complaint its that it lacks features. I would have paid a couple hundred more to get maybe some dynamics or some routing or cue outputs.

Applause for the 710 !!!!

I will never again buy another piece of gear through eBay. No offense, Gnasticious, but Caveat Emptor.
