Hi,

I was thinking of purchasing a new condenser, and I am kind of torn between a Shanghai model, and a (Chinese) 797.

Which one would you recommend?

Overall, I've had better luck with the Shanghai, and they seem to be kind of an up-and-comer, but 797 has pumped out a few good ones here and there as well.

Thanks!

Golly, which models were you thinking of?

Get the 797 CR1000.

I have this one. It's 797's top-of-the-line, and I think it is pretty sweet. I only paid $425 three years ago from a guy who had imported a few before 797 started selling in the USA themselves. Is it worth the asking price of $1,000? I dunno, and I haven't compared it to any of the budget tube mics (<$500) out there. I think RE and Ed have both used this mic and thought fairly highly of it, but I don't want to put words in their mouths.

I've already got a pair of Feilo/Shanghai mxl603s. I've been seriously pondering the Feilo mxl69, but Ozraves makes a good case for picking up another 797 Audio B1. That might be the ticket right now.

I think the Feilo/Shanghai MXL603S's are great mic's... but, if you already have some 603S's, the 797 Audio B1 is a pretty mic.

Hey Oz, that's a really nice picture of that CR1000 next to the Audio Technica there.

I would never buy a 797 mic! Did you see these mics below?? I've taken the pix from the Beijing 797 Audio web site. They not only look exactly like the Sennheisers, they even have the same f&%$ names: 441 and 421!! Buying a mic from 797 is like buying a stolen mic for me. They are not imported Sennheisers which they re-sell, are they????

Also if you read the 797 Audio "History" page it says "The company was constructed with the aid of Germany in 1956" and etc... so maybe they are Sennheiser's mic's, or very close?

close enough for me. Its interesting to hear that 797 obviously got a jump start by Sennheiser. Sennheiser might have shared their technology, so it is indeed possible that the 797 441 and 421 are similar to the original Sennheiser. It'll be interesting to compare how they sound like.

I agree, it would be interesting to hear them side by side and see the spec sheets side by side... I also think it would be interesting to hear the B1 and CR1000 side by side and etc.
